I picked up a 1975 Rem 700 .308 a few months ago in a nice laminated stock with the intention of using the action and stock for a custom build...something I would use as a dedicated deer rifle in my local area, as the only "big" game we can hunt in my MU are deer or black bear, and I'm not into bear hunting.
I settled on .308 because I have lots of powder and bullets that work well for that caliber, and I know it will be more than adequate for the type of deer hunting I do in my zone...99% of which is well under 300 yards. I have plenty of bigger guns for moose and elk "up north" etc...so no worries there
I chose a Benchmark Barrel in #4 contour with a 1 in 11 twist, 5R rifling and 5 grooves...finished length at 22". I broke it in over 40 rounds...it cleans up nice and easy, no copper problems.
Guntech chambered and installed the barrel and also trued the action. The donor rifle already came with an older 700 trigger that had a nice trigger job done...also by Guntech. I installed a Kwik Klip detachable mag kit and bedded the stock with Marinetex.
I loaded up some 168g Barnes TTSX bullets with 43g of Varget...using an old Leupold VX-I, 3-9x40 with standard duplex reticle, this was the first 3 shot group at 100 yards...I guess she's a keeper!
Thanks Dennis (Guntech)!...and thanks to Gary at Bighorn for the barrel!
