I was watching a Midway youtube video on accurizing a rem 700 action. I was wondering if it is worthwhile investment to get the tools to do the work myself, or is it better to find a gunsmith. I am new to precision shooting and not sure on costs for a gunsmith to true up my action and bolt. Im currently shooting a remington 700 with a 5r 26" barrel, had great groups at 100yds, but grouping fell off at 200, i know that this will be mostly on my the shooter, but would like to tighten this up.

Any info would be greatly appreciated

It is best to replace the barrel at the same time as getting the action blueprinted. Not to mention the benefits from blueprinting are the smallest among all the rifle modifications eg custom barrel, new trigger, quality handloads etc

The 5R has a pretty good reputation, can you give some details about the issue? Factory or handloads?

I'd rather invest the money in another action, a Remington clone. That will addresses all the issues with problems with the machining done at the Remington factory, and even more. Cost you close to $2,000, but it will be better than a re-machined Remington.

I think the most important factor is the barrel, second the bedding/stock action connection, third place the stock itself. After that action.

Your specific issues are probably related to something else. That said when it comes time to re-barrel consider the following.

There is a good video series on YT which shows action truing done properly via single point cutting and establishing the centreline of the receiver with dial gauges. This method should run a few hundred dollars in labour done by an experienced machinist

Have a look at the YT action truing video series by “suar 08161991”

As others have said a custom action might make more sense economically, but to answer your questions I don’t think the tools Midway is showing will yield the same precision machine work that $250-300 spent with an experienced journeyman gunsmith.

I have both custom actions and Remington based rifles and am happy to spend the extra to true a Remington as part of a total build.

I charge $175 to true a 700 action and bolt and another $75 if you want the bolt bumped... and I have done many... that's considerably cheaper than buying what is needed and learning the how to... and a trued 700 will shoot as well as the custom actions with repeating actions and larger than short range bench rest cartridges...... just not as pretty maybe...

Worth doing if you like to tinker, want to go through the process and learn , be warned you can easily wreck the components with inexperience, If your not a machinist type try to find someone who is to help ooorrr get a good gunsmith to do it and just enjoying the shooting part ,
A trued Remington shooting as well as a custom action is relative to what you are trying to achieve , ok for plinking ,but in some disciplines it does not hold true

If it's grouping at 100 meters but not 200 meters the issue is ammo or something else like poor optics. However, that said, yeah you'd have to do around 5 actions to break even if you didn't break anything trying to do it the first few times. Then you'd still have to send the rifle out for headspace and chambering. As much as I like to buy tools to learn myself I think your miles ahead sending it out to a reputable gunsmith.

I have one 700 left with timing problem. And 2 stiller tac. Dont waist time and money on garbage, it will still be considered as garbage if you want to re-sale
