Rem 700 action

I don't go oversize but it''s fairly common to cut 10 thou oversize when some true 700 actions. I prefer not to. I believe you could easily go 50 thou over... but why?

Thanks, I used a PTG mandrel and bushings to bore the action to .705 then faced the action and touched off the lugs. To cleaning up the 1 1/16 thread i have gone 11 thou over the original size.

Yes, that's what that tap does. You need to thread .010 or so oversize on the new barrel tenon.
Factory barrels will be loose in the action now.
Do you plan to sleeve the factory bolt or install a PTG oversize one?

Does this mean you don't cut the threads?

No, I do cut the threads that are protruding 'inside' what would be true and not cutting the threads that are 'outside' what would be true... I do this with the standard size piloted tap, not the over size one.. It does not touch some of the factory thread and it cuts some of the factory thread making it so the actual thread is true with the bore of the action when a barrel is torqued tight. It's a concept some argue doesn't work but I am very pleased with the results. Before and after testing of crookedness and run out proves it.

60 degree V threads self align and center when they are tightened... you can install a standard thread barrel in a 10 thou oversize action and it will work just fine... a slightly loose thread fit is better than a slightly tight thread fit.
