Rem 700 - Detachable AR Mags? Pics post 1. UPDATED post 48

My local smith has done this mod for the local police.

Fairly simple if I understand correctly. I asked how much to do my 700 in 223..... His response; under $300 no mags included......

The only reason I didn't go ahead with it is my OAL would have to be much shorter and I can't get my rifle to shoot unless I am right up on the lands.

Cheers!

Who is the Smith if you don't mind me asking?

Mags are here. I have the Magpul Windowed 30 rounders with the "Maglevel", which is a painted coil on the spring that gives you an approximate count as to how many rounds you have left. There are numbers on the side of the window to help you gauge as well, 5, 15, and 25.

Really nice magazines. I can't wait until that orange Maglevel goes down past 25. (Legally! They will be either modifed to no longer fit in an AR, or just permanently attached to the floorplate.)

The rifle should be in my possesion before the end of this week, and then I can start figuring this out.

Robarm used to do a M14 mag conversion. That would be way more interesting to me than a 30 round AR conversion, but that's me...I'm a 308 guy more than 223.

Picked up the rifle today.

Just a quick pic with the bottom plate removed so the mag will fit.

Even just like this, it feels so right. :D The magazine does not stick out the bottom nearly as much as I expected it to, a lot of the mag stays inside the magwell.

I am in talks with a smith right now, so we will see if he can do it or not.

I think you are going to have to take the feed lips off the action to get the mag high enough for the bolt to pick up the rounds.

+1 on this as well.

Because it was feeding from a hinged floorplate magazine, there are feed lips in the magwell which have to be removed for the AR magazine to get close enough to the bolt to feed.

Learned that by playing around with it for a bit.

It would pick up a round every now and then, but not reliably with the factory feed lips in place. 2 minutes on a mill would fix that.

Just FYI.......

But you would still have to use Canadian legal AR mags......

Unless you design a new mag (not a variant of an AR mag or an altered AR mag), and then get it certified by the RCMP FRT lab......

At least that is how it was explained to me by the guy who I know who has done this mod........

We were contemplating this idea also when our bottom metal magazine conversion kit was in it's development stages. Although after reading this statement from the RCMP we are glad that we decided to pass on the idea and stick to the proven & reliable AI magazines.

OK, so I read through that, and I understand that if you wanted to make it a detachable magazine, all of the current magazine rulings would apply, ie, 5 rounds for all magazines except the LAR magazines.

That did not answer the question I had about the legalities of building the magazine into the rifle so that the body of the magazine is not removable in any way, wether by means of pinning the magazine into the stock, making a mould of the bottom metal and having the AR magazine encased in it, etc.

Would this be a legal way to do it, as the magazine would no longer be usable in AR-15 rifles? I can not see a reason why it would not be legal unless there is a rule about not modifying the magazine to fit in a different firearm, while losing the detachable aspect.

It would be a really s**tty process to have to build a magazine from scratch, as it ruins the whole point of being able to use cheap and accessable magazines to do the build.

But.....lets say you made a new mag.....that had an inletted channel down the center of each side of the mag.....and the 700 had bottom metal with two "bumps" (one on each side) that would fit into said channels, allowing it to seat but preventing AR mags from fitting (due to the bumps). Now you have a 30 round mag made FOR the 700, as it won't accept AR mags (again, because of the bumps). Now the fact that these "channels", as they are concave, will not prevent the mag from fitting into an AR...well, it would probably make you rich.....

Just sayin'

Nice if you could......

But I believe you would have to Manu afire a whole new firearm to go with the mag......

Don't see a reason you would have to manufacture a new rifle. It has nothing to do with building a new firearm and magazine, just what magazine the rifle was designed for.

Anyways, I had a good discussion with the RCMP techs about the idea mentioned in this thread with my idea.

The same rule that applies to LAR-15 10 round magazines also unfortunately applies to any AR magazine used in another rifle. The 5 cartridge limit applies.

I already set up the epoxy mold and I am going to go ahead with the idea, despite the fact that the mag must be pinned.

Shame.
