I have a 223 Rem 700 that often (30%) fails to eject the case, it just falls onto the follower. I have taken the bolt apart and cleaned it , including removing the plunger and spring both of which seem OK with the same strength of spring as on my other 700's . The ejector is also even with the top of the bolt head. I replaced the extractor a while ago which helped but did not cure the problem ( the extractor is the newer one without the rivet). Any ideas as to the cause?

You can try cutting 3 coils off the ejector spring and see if that helps. It won't hurt anything...

No joy. It does still eject dummy rounds with a bullet well which I forgot to mention. Looks like it will be a single shot for a while till I have more time to play with it.

See how the extractor groove at the rear of the case is interacting with the bolt nose... sometimes the bolt nose does not have enough bevel where the case is forced over by the ejector and the case releases from the extractor early... or possibly the extractor needs to be bent for a bit more engagement.

There was not quite enough bevel on the bolt nose, I took off about 20 thousandths or so and bingo empties eject when the bolt is worked both slow and smartly :). Thanks again Guntech for help.
