I'm considering a rem 700 mountian rifle in 30-06, any first hand(or second hand ) experience in terms of accurate and performance .My only concern is the cut down barrel holding accuracy after a few shots. I've handled the rifle and it fits me so nice, feels so good to carry to hold and to look at, just never shot one.

I've had great accuracy out of mine...I bought it and put it in a Wildcat stock and it shot great. Not sure who owns it now but it was a fine gun for the time I had it.

Definatly nice guns to handle and I just swapped out the laminate stock for something a bit more rugged.

great rifles, not the best for range shooting in the summer, but for a hunting rifle that you pack alot more than you shoot, they're awesome. The 700 LSS Mtn is probably one of the best looking factory rifles lately too

I had a 700 Mountain LSS in .260 Rem that I sold in a moment of idiocy. It was an easy carrying, fine shooting and great looking little rifle. One in .30-06 would be almost perfect as I think that .280 Rem(if you reload) would be the magic combination.

I had good luck with one in .270 Win, but there are a few caveats. First, as has been mentioned, the barrel heats up very quickly, so it is not an ideal rifle for the range. Second is that the felt recoil is quite sharp due to the narrow stock design. The newer ones have limbsavers, but mine still had the hockey puck. Going through 20 rounds at the bench was down-right uncomfortable.

I have an LSS in 7mm/08....the BEST bolt action rifle I have ever owned (out of several hundred)

This gun puts the first two shots into the same hole at 100, the third opens up to .75". This is a hunting rifle, not a range gun....the pencil barrel just gets too hot too quick for benchrest accuracy, but MAN can it shoot those first two!

My 270 LSS Mtn does this...but like many of you I have the sickness and have moved on to other things.

My '92 vintage 25-06 Mtn. Rifle is one of the best shooting light weight rifles I've ever had my hands on...a keeper for sure....:D

I have a model 700 mountain LSS in .30-06 and it is simply my absolute favorite. With 180 gr accubonds I have yet to use a second shot on game. It shoots under an inch before the barrel gets to hot and even then only opens up to about 2" at 100 meters. I have complete confidence in it and can honestly say that I will have this rifle for a long long time.

I recommended this rifle to my Bro in Law and hunting partner,
It is accurate, light ,attractive a pleasure to shoot in 30-06 .
Mounted with leupold rings and a burris fullfield II the end result is a happy proud gun owner.

Most definately Yeh and also get yourself a Quick Klip mag conversion.

I have an older Rem 700 Mtn in 280 Rem is an absolute dream to shoot and is very accurate consistantly giving me 3/4" and better 100 yard 3 shot groups.

Your first shot on game will be from a cold barrel so heating won't be a concern.if you need a "few" shots to drop a deer , then it's time to go back to the range or get our meat at Safeway.
