Rem 700 question

no, not my first rifle...but my first foray in to the long reach gun category. Hunting 250-275yds is ok, I was thinking more 800-850+ reach

Well I am not going to elaborate on shooting game at 850+ yards. But I will recommend you do not.

For target use that caliber will do fine, so would any other chambering starting with .223 size with the correct setup.

Don't buy a 300WM for your first long range gun, this is a very bad idea. It will give you some very bad habits unless you are already stone cold when you pull the trigger.

You should be looking for a 308 and nothing bigger.

If you don't reload the 308 is nice because you can buy match ammo and you can shoot it all day. Getting in lots of trigger time is going to make you a beast on the rifle not a big round like the 300WM that you can only shoot 20 times.

Bad habits? Like what? What should I be looking for?
I shoot a Ruger m77 in .223 and a Browning .308 blr regularly...I don't reload, so the scary thing for me in .300 is the cost to shoot,... but what am I missing?

The other funny thing I noticed, is the bolt. Unlike the pictures that I see on the net this one is twisted, is that normal? Is that for looks or is there a point to it?

I figured as much...but it looks fancy..:)
I think i'll try and beat him up on price some more and take it....how bad could it be.

I think what he is trying to say is that he feels the 300 wm has way to much recoil to be able to shoot accurately and it will give you flinching habits...I guess this might be true if you grew up only shooting 22LR and think a 308 has a lot of recoil. I see this quite often on this site...I guess its what you get use to. :)

ohh...ok, i get it. My 12ga slug gun has a lot of recoil, everything after that is peanuts compared...:)
I think my mind is made up, thanks for all your help; and if it doesn't work out, look for it on EE...and trust me it will be clean and with new glass, but I hope not.

I don't think you can go to wrong with a rem. 700, if it doesn't shoot to your expectations and few dollars spent will improve it and if you find the 300 wm recoil is a little much a muzzle break will tame it down to less than 308 win. levels. Good luck and I hope you enjoy it !!! :)
