Rem 700 SPS 16.5" barrel in 308 Who's shooting one?

I have been getting into shorter and shorter barreled rifles I saw one of the Rem 700 SPS 16.5" barreled tactical rifles in 308 the other day.

I'm also looking at the MDT LSS aluminum stock.

Anyone using these rifles and/or stocks?
 
I went the 22" barrel route for my 308 but i do use the mdt lss.
Fantastic stock, solid and comfortable. It does the trick for sure.
Using a magpul ctr with larue cheek riser and larue picatinny rail for an atlas monopod. Almost went the magpul prs route, but the length of pull is a pretty good stretch with the adapter.

I had the combo you described, just sold mine a couple weeks ago. I was smitten by the idea of using AR parts I guess.
The MDT chassis is a quality piece and well built as well as their ten round mag which fed like butter. I've had Badger and V-bull systems before with steel AICS mags and they are always somewhat notchy. The combination of the LSS chassis and the polymer mags blows them out of the water for smoothness.

It shot tight enough, but at the end of the day the novelty wore off. I just couldn't see much point to a bolt action with a pistol grip, every time you rack the bolt your removing your hand from the grip and I found it slower to reset my trigger finger/hand then a conventional stock if that makes any sense.
Also the 16.5" AAC likes bullets heavier than 150r and velocities over my chrono were pretty lethargic.

Two words... muzzle and blast. You can feel the pressure wave in the fillings of your teeth! :HR:
Only way I would enjoy a 16.5" .308 is with a can and subsonic like they are meant to run but we all know that isn't happening anytime soon.

Can you tell me about the mags what I want to know is when you purchased the LSS stock is all you need to do is buy the mag and it inserts or do you have to purchase mag release etc?

I'm now thinking pistol grip with a left hand bolt might make reloading easier for a right hander.

Mag-well is machined into the chassis and the release is included,just insert your mag and shoot...plug and play.

Don't let my assessment of the pistol grip bother you, it's just a personal niggle of mine and judging by the success of all the other chassis/tube gun configurations there is a large market for them and most people like them. I just found I prefer a conventional quality composite rifle stock under my 700's.
All I seem to do these days is buy a gun,find a fatal imagined flaw with it so I can make room for the next latest greatest to come into my life! I need help.

The thought of a leftie action had crossed my mind though...now that would be interesting!

The chassis is ready to pop a magazine in right out of the box. Screw your action in, attach a butstock of choice, pop a mag in and you're good to go.

Just make sure you're getting AICS style magazines, or buying the ones direct from MDT, other styles of detachable magazine may not be compatible at all.
 
Anyone have velocities for different bullet weights they can post?

I was thinking about a rifle configuration exactly like Sun_and_Steel_77's but in OD green, a Magpul MIAD pistol grip and no muzzle brake/flash hider to bump up sound.

I already have the same stock on my shelf even have a black grip to get by with until I can find a MIAD.

Being able to swap back to a Houge stock whenever I feel like it also works for me just wish it was available in 243 or 260 Rem.

I'd put a VX3 2.5-8X36mm B&C reticle scope onto it.

I live less than 20 klm from MDT so could just stop in and pick up a stock/mags.

I only ever shot 150's out of mine, a few handloads with various powders on hand, Varget,TAC,H335 and some federal blue box and when I did shoot over my chronometer I was seeing between 2550-2625 FPS.
My handloads weren't toasty (book max) but they weren't starting loads either.
150 gr Hornady SPBT's over some TAC gave the higher speeds and the least amount of muzzle flash due to a more complete burn. Factory Federal Blue box was the slowest if IIRC. Keep in mind the factory fodder will most likely be tailored to burn efficiently in 20-22" pipes, hand loading for a short barrel is ideal but you already knew that.

If you do end up swinging by MDT please thank them for bringing their fine products to the Canadian market and ask them if their 10rd Polymer mag will function in a Ruger Scout.

That is exactly the same velocities I am getting from my 308Bellm (444 Marlin brass necked down with 308 Win dies) in my 21" barreled T/C Contender carbine shot my biggest antlered mule deer buck @ 210 yards with that combo so it is still an admiral hunting round that I'd use on deer out to at least 300 - 350 yards.

This may turn out to be an excellent still hunting blacktail deer combo.

The MDT LSS stock will it only accept bull barrels or would say a 20" - 24" sporter barrel fit.

I'm now thinking If I go this route/stock I'd want a 260 Rem and a slightly longer barrel.
 
I'm using the .308 SPS 16.5" in a LSS right now. For the last year or so it's been a favourite long-range coyote killer, although less so now that the pelts are prime. I just wanted to try one of the chassis-type set-ups, not into competition at all. As S&S stated, the novelty is wearing off. The completed rig is a bit heavier than I had hoped, and it doesn't sling and carry as comfortably as a traditional rifle...but that could just be my inate Fuddiness showing. :) Muzzle blast? Sure, it's loud, but not worse than a number of other guns I use regularly. Accuracy has been stellar. Long story short: I'm not sure if I'll be selling the whole rig, or just the stock and accessories, but I think I've scratched the "chassis itch" and suspect I'm going back to standard stocks from now on.

Barrel channel is definitely Sendero/Varmint contour or larger.
I think the LSS would look positively goofy with a smaller contour barrel especially over 20".
the fore-end of the chassis is already very minute in size.
When I was searching for info on the chassis I came across an image of the LSS with a long skinny barrel, so the fuglyness is real and not imagined. If I can find the image and it's not one of the members here on CGN I will post it for you.

One in ten twist not so good with the lighter bullets. I think I would stick with an LTR,XCR compact or SPS Tactical with a one in twelve twist for the lighter bullets (Note the SPS comes in both a one in ten and a one in twelve twist), also it appears that Remington is no longer offering the AAC it with a 16.5" barrel,only a 20" barrel. I also found the comments about the use of a pistol grip and chassis very enlightening.

I dont think its the twist ( fast with lighter bullets) that is the issue...more of the jump to the rifling that is


You can not over spin a bullet IMHO

Found the same thing with mine; now I just keep my thumb alongside the grip on the right. Much faster and more comfortable.

A data point/reference point for you to consider...I get 2671 from a 26" stock tube on a /remy 700 with Factory Fed 165 gr Game Kings based on my drop data @ 350 meters.

EDIT to add 1-12 twist........
