Anyone own or have an opinion on the Rem 700 SPS varmint in .204 Ruger?I've heard the SPS are not finished as nice as earlier Rem's QC ? my son is looking at one that came in to a gunshop as a trade in...........Thanx Harold

All Rem 700's are the same rifle, but have different finishes. Tell your son to look around, locally, for ammo, brass and components before he buys.

I picked one up in a .223. Trigger can come down a fair amount, I think. As for finish, to me it looks just fine for a black rifle. I topped it with a VX-II 4-12 Fine Duplex, and a Harris bipod.
So far just using Winchester white box 45gr, and it shoots well. Had it out in Manitoba a week ago and turned a fair amount of gophers into extra parts.
No complaints at all, and I'm actually warming up to the look of all the black parts.

I have a regular SPS in 22-250. The stock isn't pretty, but it fits me well. The metal finish is a bit rough, but the rifle shoots well. The SPS line is the econo line of 700s... they shoot pretty good, but aren't as nicely finished as other models. I can't complain about the price and would buy another myself. It's a genuine 700 action and it isn't tough to adjust the trigger to be decent. Also, there are tons of after market goodies if one should desire. 204 Ruger sounds like a fun little round! I say go for it!

Got one in 223 and I'm quite happy with it. Trigger does need to be backed off a touch, just haven't gotten around to it yet. Been shooting mostly cheap stuff through it and it'll do a 5 shot group under a inch. Not bad for a cheaper rifle.

A freind brought one to me in .204 complaining about groups,I took it out shot it and told him to buy a better scope as that appeared to be the problem. With the 40gr loads it was putting three out of five into less than 1/4 inch.5 shots went into just over an inch but as I said the problem was the scope.Triggers on these rifles are crisp but heavy from the factory and most can be turned down but they are inconsistant as to how much. The actions are rough but that is more from the finish applied to it than anything else.

Have the exact gun, .204 SPS Varmint. Bedded mine and had trigger job done to just over 2 lbs. Decent but not fantastic shooting gun, rarely over MOA but not much under - don't think I've shot better than .75 MOA in about 250 rds of load development/practice - yes, I am capable of better ;) . Good enough for gophers at 200? absolutely!

Most around here are really down on the stock, I actually like it well enough for what it is, nice wide relatively flat forend. No obvious bad finish work anywhere on the gun.

Just got one on Saturday, really like it put a fixed 10x and bipod on it, first time out coverd six holes with a quarter @ 100yds. I like it, matte finnish looks like it will be good for field work.
