Here is a pic of my new Rem 700 sps tactical SSD in .308. It has the threaded 20" heavy barrel, adjustable trigger and 1 in 10 twist with hogue overmoulded ghille green stock (soon to be changed to AICS 1.5). I added a one piece picatinny rail and a Millet TRS-1 tactical scope in 4x-16x (50mm) with illuminated mildot reticle and Harris 6-9" bi-pod.

Nice setup. Could you get away with a lower set of rings? That scope seems to be very high. Enjoy!

Yeah I may switch to some lower rings. I am waiting for my AICS stock to get here to see how low the gun mounts in the stock first. That's what I get for listening to the guy at lebarons lol. Heading back there to check out the med and possibly low rings tomorrow.

Nothing wrong with high rings, especially if you use a scope mounted anti-cant device. It can actually help you with long range precision.

Bare with me here as I'm new to precision shooting what is an anti-can't device and it's purpose? Should I keep the high rings or switch to med or low? I'm going to google it but it is better from someone experienced. Ahh fancy term for level got it. So what's the pros vs cons of high mounts? Should I go lower?

if the rifle is "canted" it is tilting left or right, for closer "hunting" shots this isnt a big deal, but in long range precission having the rifle canted when that bullit leaves tha barrel can change you POI drastically at liong distances, even a few degrees with change your POI by inches!

and anti cant device is basically a little spirit leval that mounts to the scope or picitanny rail, for them to be truly usefull you need a bipod that can tilt.

as far as the rings go, other then asthetics, you need to have a good cheek weld and be comfortable behind the rifle its just as important as any thing else, on my 700 i run medium hight rings (same scope as you) and it allows me to have a good cheek weld and see threw the scope with out having to rack my neck on one way or another, if u find your self cranking your nect up to see threw the scope youd want to get a lower set of rings, chances are with a 50Obj, low rings wont work, so your stuck with medium or high.

Thanks for the response ultimate monkey. I think I will wait till the AICS stock gets here to decide how the cheek weld is ( adjustable cheekpad too). I can't believe I asked a silly newbie Q and didn't get flamed on CGN who would have thought? Maybe folks in the precision shooting section are more laid back or something lol

You're going to have a great platform once you get the AICS stock installed. If I was in need of another .308 Win. I'd buy the 700 SSD for it's 1:10" twist threaded barrel.

Everyone on this form goes on and on about "long range precision shooting" while the simple truth is that the majority of your shooting will likely be done at short to medium range, typically 100yds.-600yds.

Start @100yds. and practice, practice, and practice some more. Once you've developed consistent and proper technique, go further out and learn all you can about reading wind conditions and how it will affect the drift of your bullet in flight.

Unless your head is rather large, I'd get rid of those rings. As mentioned before, a proper cheek weld is absolutely critical. Without it, you're just throwing money away on ammunition. The AICS's adjustments will be a great benefit.

looks way better! im surprised low rings fit, thats the same clearance i have with my medium rings (leopuld)

oh well! finding it more comfortable to be behind the rifle with lower rings?

tact knobs tend to be bigger :/ so i dont see that happening, unless the bolt arm is slightly extended.. but keep me posted on this one im curious now!

i find once i am down prone and fireing, i dont "grab" the bolt knob, just lift up from underneath and pull back from the front with my index and middle finger.. so the bolt clearance has never bothered me
