Rem 700 sps tactical. To buy or not to buy?

I bought a .308 SPS Tact last year. For the price, was hard to say no to. I'm no marksman, but this little rifle will shoot .75-1.0 all day at 100m. Stuck a vortex 4-12 on it, and voila. Equal or sub moa rifle for equal or sub $1000. Its not the best rifle out there, but it will do until I get something better down the road.

All in all, happy with my rifle. What more can a guy ask for?

A used target rifle would be a much better deal if you want an accurate rifle worth developing.

First, a single shot action is much stiffer.

A single shot action can have a third action screw (between the front and rear screws) to better anchor the action.

It will have a good trigger.

It will have a solid stock, and will be bedded.

It will have a quality barrel.

The only problem is the tacticool guys have never heard of Musgrave or Wichita or Swing.

For example, here is a Musgrave. Note the solid and FLAT (for maximum bedding support) bottom on the action and the three action screws. This rifle can be bought for $800.

Ganderite - my, my you are almost flirting with "Fuddism" :) Of course you are 100% correct - a target rifle such as you describe will likely have greater inherent accuracy than a 'Tacticool' rifle but there are two factors that you ought to consider: The appearance or, if you wish, the 'eye-appeal' of the tactical rifle is partially what is being sought and, secondly, many of us may not be able to fully exploit the inherent accuracy of the single shot target rifle over the tactical rifle. Purchases like this are actually a compromise - you want the look and acceptable accuracy - given those parameters the SPS Tactical IMO fits the bill.

The LKF can trump accuracy.
You are thinking in terms of competitive excellence, not recreational plinking.;)

I am very interested on this MDT TAC21 chasis. I went to their website and it explains that it is for Remington 700 Short Action, but it doesn't specify which 700 series.

My question is, can I get any 700 series? On the Remington website, the even have more than one tactical series ones. Which one that goes with MDT TAC 21?

I run a SPS Tac in .308, it sits in an MDT Tac 21 chassis... and yes, it shoots as good as it looks...

Good question. I have no idea why they need that info. Send them an e-mail. Laslo is a great guy and I'm sure he could tell you why they are asking for that info.

So if I bought an aftermarket stock and bedded it and swapped to a jewel trigger and hand loaded for it, would that be worth it? I really like the 20" barrel I, I want a nice compact rifle like that. Are there better choices out there that are the same idea as the sps tac?

Not for the price - I have a TRG 22 with 20" tube but it cost a lot more than my SPS 20" (even after adding the AICS)

I totally forgot about the sako trg's. How is the accuracy out of that rifle?

20" barrel on the trg 42 .338 lapua mag? That is getting a little short for a .338 i'd think haha.

Mine is in .308 and so far accuracy is the same as my 26" version out to 600m. I will add these rifles into my next review of rifles when I get round to writing it.

get the sps

they are 600 new VS about 1050 for a 5R

Accuracy will be similar.

Take the 450 saved over the 5r and you're nearly half way to an MDT or AICS

Some of you may have seen my other thread looking for a lightweight precision shooter. Well I am considering a Remington 700 SPS tactical in a .308. Small, pretty light with the 20" bull barrel, good price and should be a good shooter. Might consider a stock swap for a manners or mcmillan. If anyone out there has experience with this rifle let me know what your view is on it. Thanks.
