Rem. 700 SPS Tactical Vs. Savage 10FCP-K (.223) Help me?

If all you're going to do is target shoot then why wouldn't you go with the more economical cartridge? You'll lose nothing in terms of accuracy shooting .223 over .308. If you plan on eventually reloading, you can make very accurate ammo for about the same price as you can buy good quality bulk ammo for.

If you're stuck on Savage, go with the Precision Carbine model. It's lighter, handles easier, and likely less money than the one you mentioned at the beginning of this thread. It's still upwards to $200 more than the SPS 700 so keep that in mind.

2bad4u2, Ya, this was my initial thought with the .223 option, I know that I'll never hunt with it. I don't reload rifle at this point, however I already have a pile of spent .223 that would get me off to a good start.

I looked at the Precision Carbine, I like the big bulky look of the 10 FCP-K, if it was bigger, I would probably like it more... I don't know what that makes me? A guy who wants to shoot 338 or 50, but can only afford .223 lol.

You know, I had the same thoughts years ago. Big heavy rifles with 26" truck axel barrels were definitely my thing. I got really tired of humping those to the range. Now, I won't go above 20" in barrel length and a std. Rem. varmint contour is all I could want for. Ironically enough, I still have a few barrels left that are too heavy for my liking but I'll use them up before I consider buying anything else.

Whatever you decide, make sure you're happy with it before you buy it. I hate seeing guys spend money and not ending up happy. It happens to us all at some point and it's a bitter pill to swallow.

Thanks!
Everyone’s input has been great; it’s probably reduced my “sitting on the fence” time by half.

I appreciate you all taking the time to share your thoughts and opinions.

If that's the case then I wouldn't recommend either of these rifles because they don't have the twist rate your looking for. 80 grain VLD's will need a 1:8 and 90 grain VLD's will need a 1:7. Tikka and Savage (different model) offer these twist rates. Just something to think about.
If I might add to your fence sitting. I've been looking to acquire a rifle for the same reasons you stated (.223 though)... the savage 12 has been my shortlist... has a 1:9" twist rate, good from as low as 40gr - 75 grain, heavy barrel 26". And later on in it's life, you can drop it in a fancy new stock.

... just sayin'... although my shortlist is also in a constant state of flux! choices and money, they mix well.
