Rem 700 - sticky bolt

My postal lady delivered it this morning (Sunday)...

A quick inspection shows the 'divot/dent' Bill mentioned in the initial extraction cam on the bolt... but it looks no worse than the majority of used 700 bolts...

It does have excessive headspace about 8 thou.

The lug lapping that was done appears to be minimal and looks fine.

I suspect the barrel should be set back about 3 threads (187 thou) and re chambered to the correct headspace. Before doing this it could also be trued...

I'll pm or email you about this.

Well crap! The concentricity of the chamber, bore and threads is so bad this barrel is toast... I wasted an hour and a half trying to fix it... another barrel is required.

How does this happen , for a gun to develop excessive head space, and be so far out of concentricity it is not fit to use ? It doesn't seem logical it left the factory like this.

I am sure it left the factory with some concentricity issues. I have seen that before when you go to set the barrel back... but I doubt it did develop headspace on it's own. Never encountered a headspace problem on a factory 700. The action almost appears reblued, quite hard to establish that. I have been amazed before at how well a 700 would shoot when you could see a concentricity problem when set up in the lathe.

I had planned on setting the barrel back about 3 threads... but when dialing the bore in indicating off what would be the new throat area, the existing threads and the rear of the chamber had a lot of wobble.

I have now installed a 243 heavy barrel I had here. I will test it shortly. The initial extraction cam has about 15 thou less engagement than I would like.

Before I attempted any work on this rifle I listed all the options open to the owner. Selling the rifle as is was one of the options and that is what occurred... it turns out that was his best option.

Hi All
I am very happy with the help and advice Dennis has provided. I bought this used as you all know and it had been worked on before as the stock was bedded and poorly fitted recoil pad installed. I suspect they were searching for accuracy. I considered a project rifle and Dennis advised me of the options but in the end I decided to go another way. Good to see the gun has a barrel and new lease on life. Good on ya, Dennis.

Thanks again,

Pete

Well I installed a BDL Heavy barrel and stuck it in a heavy barrel stock and just went and shot 3 Winchester 100 grain factory rounds I had here... it shot close to 3/4".

I will now turn that barrel lighter and install it on another action I have and into the hunting stock and this trued, bumped, trigger worked and timed action will be posted for sale. It is good...
