Iam looking at buying my 1st large game rifle. I have always wanted a Remington 700 in 300 win mag. The more research I do the more I'm questioning my purchase. Is the 700 still the best all around big game rifle or has its day come and perhaps should be considering a Savage and save a few bucks.

Thanks

Don't be afraid of any factory 700. It's an excellent rifle and still the strongest, safest 2 lug bolt action ever made.

Like asking people about cars... You can't go wrong with a 700 or a Savage, in my opinion. There are other manufacturers out there that I haven't worked with, who seem to make good gear too.

(Most unhelpful answer ever :)

Look around, Rem products did cheap out in the last years, but they still make a good rifles, Marlin X7 and Wtby Vanguard are never a hit or a miss... JP.

Nothing wrong with a Remmy. I have several. I also like several other makes of rifles, Browning, Winchester, Tika, Sig, Lee enfield, it goes on. The nice thing about a Remmy you can get any after market part you can dream of. I purchesed a Remmy 308 SPS some traded in because it did not shoot (I got it for the action). I took it home gave it a good cleaning and took it to the range, 3 inch group with a given factory ammo. I loaded some 150 gr with varget. 5 shoots in an inch. Now I am thinking of giving it to my daughter-in-law.

If you've always wanted a Rem 700 in .300 WM go get one. I would say there are better options, but you may as well get what you want. If you end up not liking it just sell it and get something else. A gun holds a fair amount of value so you won't be out lots of money if you don't like it.

When it comes to factory actions ive had them all, now its down to two ... Rem 700 and Sako 85.

If you get a nice 700 CDL or an XCR in 300wm ... i dont think you will ever sell it. I highly recomend the CDL

^Agreed.

I wanted the CDL SF for a few years and when one showed up locally I bought it (didn't really care what caliber). Just so happened to be in .300 Win Mag which worked out well for a good all around hunting rifle. I won't ever sell it.

They are not what they once were, but none of them are. The only rifle that has actually improved in the last decade as far as QA and fit and finish is the Model 70. That could be changing here.
Do yourself a favor though and advertise for a used one in excellent condition on the EE. I would rather have a 60-90's vintage personally, but to each there own.
FWIW, all the hunting rifles with the exception of my Grandfather's Mauser and Enfield are stainless Remingtons.
