I want to make a choice. Either the Remington 700 tactical or the weatherby vanguard varmint special in 308. Both with short heavy barrels. What one should I buy and why? Need help deciding!!

Vanguard S2. Build quality, quality control like you won't believe for the price. Remington, not known for that lately.

Mine shoots very well indeed. Guaranteed sub MOA.

Thanks for the input, I kinda wanted the 700 for the m24 style cool factor, But have heard good things about the vanguard.

Both are good, the vanguard has a better trigger and a better stock right off the line than the Remington. I like the Remington action better and I own both actions.

I bought a Howa 1500 V2 Varmint with a 20" barrel and Hogue stock for $599 from Italian Sporting Goods in late 2010. Mine is a .223 Rem. but you should be able to buy a .308 Win. for the same money. Howa has a fluted barrel option for around $100 if you care for that. For the money, I didn't need it.

The Howa/Weatherby rifles have a nice gloss bluing and exhibit good quality fit & finish. I've got (2) 1st. Gen Vanguards & (1) 2nd. Gen Howa. The triggers are better on the newer models but the (2) 1st. Gen Weatherby's are just fine on my rifles.

I've got more 700's then anything else and I enjoy them as well. If you're considering a 700, look at the AAC-SD model for the 1:10" fluted 20" barrel. It's the same price (or close to) as the conventional TAC model.

The stocks aren't anything special on either rifle so it's a toss up as far as that goes. Should you decide to sell the stock privately, you'll sell 700 parts far quicker than you will Weatherby/Howa.

Remington all the way....I haven't seen many custom vanguard builds!!!!
cheers

And now you have...
