REM 700 Titanium finally done!!!!

There will be no difference in weight between a CM barrel and a SS providing they are the same contour, length and bore.

Here's what I would do...7mm WSM, the best of the WSM's IMHO...the 270 is good but Winchester really pushes it, doing what JOC did for the old 270...the 7 is a better cartrige IMHO....050 longer case body gives it a couple grains more case capacity and the ability to use bullets in 168gr and heavier.
Do it in a 24" Rem Mountain Rifle contour leaving the shank about 1" long and 1.15" OD over the chamber.
You're building a lightweight custom so get a good lightweight stock, a McMillan Edge in whatever pattern fits you. I'd put bottom metal in it too,..contrary to popular belief there is no weight gain with a factory aluminium floorplate. We've swapped two of them into Ti's and could detect no weight difference on our scales. Remember, you are losing the heavy steel escutcheon under the front screw, the middle screw is gone and a couple square inches of fibreglass from the bottom of the mag well..it's a wash.
Aluminium Talley's are light but they sure aren't attractive,....use them anyway.
Go with a 3-9 Leupy lightweight scope,...8.8 ounces.

If I had a Ti short mag that's the way I would build it...

Only trouble is... you cannot get a SS and CM barrel in the same contour, length and bore. As an example - Krieger will do a #0 (2.0 lbs), 1 (2.5 lbs), 2 (2.8 lbs), 3 (3 lbs), 4 and 5 contour in CM but not in SS. So a Shilen lightweight is basically the same as a Krieger #3 contour.

So if you want SS you basically have to accept close to 1/2 to 2/3 lb more at least versus a CM barrel. Or at least this is what i understand in talking to a few of the barrel manufacturers.

I passed on a used original ti in 270 some years back when I foolishly thought that mortgage payments and food were more important than gun deals. Aah, the folly of youth.

I think I bought that one:D Its a 280AI now that weighs 6lbs 3oz scoped with a 25 ounce stock....I could drop a hell of a lot of weight if I put another stock on it.

Good day all

I just picked up a used but in excellent shape Model 700 Titanium short magnum action. So it was either in 270 WSM or 300 WSM before. So I am just in the process of trying to design my next "toy". I already have a Weatherby Ultralight in 280 AI that shoots 1/2" groups and weighs 6.58 pounds. I also have a Kimber 8400 in 300 WSM that is a very nice shooter that weighs in at 6.85 pounds. Both rifles have Leupold Ultralight scopes.

So the question is...

Chrome Moly or stainless barrel? I am looking at either a Krieger CM barrel or a Caillard SS barrel. But the difference will apparently be close to 0.75 pounds.

Cartridge - leaning towards either a 7 mm WSM or 6.5 x 300 WSM (aka 264 WSM). I thought about the 325 WSM but apparently it just is not that great of a performer according to a couple of people that I talked to. I also thought about a 257 WSM as well, but now we are getting pretty overbore.

Stock - Bell & Carlson Ultralight stock - basically this is what the Remington TI's came with from the factory is my thought.

Rings will be Talley lightweight rings. Both my Weatherby and Kimber have Talley steel rings and I could easily shave 3 ounces from the weight of the gun by switching to the Talley lightweights.

Your thoughts/comments/suggestions?

I would use whatever stainless barrel you can get in a featherweight contour.

6.5/.300WSM
or 7mm/.300WSM (using the .300 case allows more brass options than the factory 7mm WSM case and will always be available)

McMillan EDGE or Wildcat Lightweight stock.

Talleys and a Leupold Ultralight.

Wyatt's centerfeed mag box, factory Rem bottom metal.

Buy a barrel blank and have your gunsmith contour it to what ever contour you want.
