I like Vortex products and I am looking at getting this scope for a rem 700 build : http://www.wanstallsonline.com/vortex-viper-pst-4-16x50mm-ffp.html

What other options would you optics guys look at?? My budget is $800 to $1100

I am looking to shoot 223 or 308

I've heard a lot of good about the PST 4-16, but some do find the glass inferior than 6-24 version, and others in the price range. Bushnell 3-12 with the G2 reticle and the Weaver Tactical 3-15 are two I'd recommend looking at.

I have a vortex 4-16, primarily use it for 200-300m. I've used it at 500 and made a hit at 1000. It's sufficient. I do think you can find equal or better for the price but it's worth considering.

Sightron S3 is what I'd do in that price range. Are you using the scope for spotting your target hits or do you have a spotting scope? Mag choice would depend on that. I always find it amazing that some seem to have bionic eye when they talk about seeing paper target hits with a low mag scope. Better eyes than me. I have a S3 10-50 on my .338LM and it works really well. I'm thinking of putting another on my Rem 5R .223 cuz the Bushnell E6500 8-32 is just not good enought to see .223 target hits at even 300 yds (for my apparently ancient non-boinic eyes).

Easy, Burris FFII 4.5x14x42mm (old style) or Sightron. Sightron over Vortex - I know, sold all my Vortex (3 of them including the 4-16x50 HS) as Sightron resolves minute detail better. I would not do FFP either at listed ranges - SFP will do.

What are you building and what do you want to do with it? If it's a 35 Whelen for brush hunting then your choice is terrible. If it's a 25-06 for use on the prairies then it's not a dreadful choice. If you want to build a precision rifle then there are better choices in that price bracket.

I bought a Remington 700 Police in 223. I will be primarily shooting at my local range which is 200 meters but also at other ranges up to about 400. It is not for hunting, just bench rested precision rifle shooting.
