REM 700 vs 1000 yards

Hi There,

I have REM 700 Mil Spec in .308 with 24" barrel, I am trying to get good opinion from professional out there how can I shoot out 1000 yards.

I am starting reloading and tried following

1- Sierra 175grn with Reloader 15
2- Lapua (not sure weight) with Varget

The reason I am asking I am new to shooting and reloading and never able to shoot that far and interested in competing FT class or provincials soon.

If you already have a load with either the 175 sierra, or 155 Lapua, you should be fine. If you are just starting load development, both powders should work with either bullet.
 
I woulld suggest the 155 - 156 grain palma bullets. These give up very little in terms of ballistic coefficients, but gain considerable velocity.
 
Your gun is fine to try out f-class, I think it is better to come out and shoot then obsess about deficiencies in your gun and load. I learned more in one day of shooting then years of reading forums.

My gun and load was getting vertical dispersion at 600 Meters and beyond, something you will never find out sitting at a laptop.

I have to agree with Jasonburnsduddee. You will get lots of advice in these forums and from experienced shooters. A couple of hours at the range will very quickly identify the shooters with credibility to give advice. The trick is to get some basic instruction and start putting rounds downrange. In my experience the more I shot the better my rifle seemed to perform.
 
Bed the action properly

Load ammo that will put 5rds with as little vertical dispersion as possible at 200yds. You should be able to dial it down to around 1/4 to 1/3 min. Horizontal will be wider but that is ok for now.

Dial up your scope another 34 to 36mins and have yourself a wonderful time.

You WILL learn more in an afternoon of a match then all the reading in the world.

Burning powder is the only way to know what you need to do to improve your set up.

And it is also the most fun....

To answer your question: I push 175SMK over 44.5grains of Varget at 2650fps(ish) and it makes the 1000yard trip.

It's not the fastest, but it is the most accurate for my factory rifle thus far.

Find the load that patterns the most consistently accurate for your rifle at the furthest distance you have access to.

Then run it over a chrony to find out the speed. Plug that into a ballistics program such as JBM and that will tell you how much it elevation you will need to reach out.

Assuming your bases/scope can give it to you, Ideally you then should shoot at that distance and see if the calculations match reality (mine is usually a little off).

If you really want to geek it up, you can shoot a statistically relevant number of shots over the chrony, measure the speed and track extreme spread and deviation for some information on how it will perform at distance.

IMO, don't sweat it too much. Once you get past a certain distance and you/your rifle is maintaining a predictable level of accuracy (even if it is not cloverleaf) it largely becomes a wind game. A few more/less grains of bullet, a few more/less fps may gain you an extra minute or two of forgiveness in wind or elevation. But an incorrect wind call will cancel that advantage instantly.

So far, the only way I've begun to even begin to read wind is with my belly in the dirt, watching scores come up (hopefully) and talking to those that know infinitely more.
 
Thanks a lot guys for helpful tips, any recommendation on brass I am currently using old Win, Hornady brass. Also where can I get chronograph and any idea how much it would cost.

That is the exact load I am using in my factory Rem 700 with .70 MOA accuracy. I have had it to 600yds with good results. I don't think the 175SMK is the most efficient bullet, but it seems to be an easy bullet to load for and it will have no problems getting to 1000yards (weather permitting)

I have also found 43.0gns of RL15 behind an 175SMK to be lighter recoiling, but still have similar accuracy and 1000yd capability.

As for brass I use WIN and Lapua, but I haven't heard anything bad about hornady. The only reason I use Lapua is because it requires less initial prep and does not cost that much more. I don't think you can go wrong with WIN or Hornady in a factory gun.

I used once fired federal and hornady for my first forays and they did fine, but with a lot of prep and sorting.

I too switched to lapua only to reduce all the prep time.
 
varget is hard to find lately for me. Here is mine
lapua brass
155 sierra palma
federal match king primer
46.5 grain imr 4895
3050 fps @ 5000ft elev on sps varmint metal with fiberglass/carbon fiber stock, 1.5 lbs stock weight
.5 moa
