Last summer in anticipation of Trudeau winning the Federal election and/or even worse scenario a coalition between the NDP/Lieberals got me going and I sold my Robinson Arms XCR-L with uppers in 223 and 6.8SPC.

I then purchased a Rem 700 LTR in 6.8SPC off of the EE and already had a 23" T/C Contender carbine barrel in 6.8SPC so I had my replacement 6.8SPC setup.

While I did have a 21" factory tapered stainless T/C Contender carbine barrel that is super accurate and after a few months I started searching for a good deal on a bolt action rifle in 223 and finally found one on a progressive sale on HuntingBC chat forum scored a BNIB stainless Rem 700 VTR in 223.

When it arrived I installed a like new but older Bushnell 3200 4-12X scope went to the gun club and was amazed at the out of box accuracy with my reloads but I really did not like the stock and I wanted a detachable mag system for this rifle planned uses are coyote/gopher shooting/hunting and SHTF.

So I started searching site sponsors for different stocks/stock systems finally went with an OD green Magpul Hunter 700 short action stock from Wolverine for $308.00 and their Hunter 799 mag well/trigger guard I then purchased three 10 round MDT plastic mags from MDT.

Finally put it all together and got out to shoot it last night to say that I am happy with the setup is an understatement, it is very accurate, stock feels very good in my hands and the mags all worked perfectly.

Only thing to do now is figure out sling mounts, sling and get a gunsmith to lop off the fugly loud 3 slot integral muzzle brake I mean its only a 223 what does anyone need a brake on a 223 for?

I have picatinny rails ordered as well so with no more to say here it is not the best of pics but what can one expect from a cell phone.

As to the triangle barrel I figured I would hate the look of it but it is actually kind of kool how the flat sides flow into the flat sides of the Magpul stock.

Looks good Cam. Does the stock come just inleted for factory floor plate? My buddy is just getting into shooting and got one in blued 223. Put a vortex viper 6.5-20x50 on it. Also amazed by its out of the box accuracy with factory ammo. Any recipes you care share? This was my first group after sight in with remington bucket of bullets.

hows the harmonics, I am building a similar one but with a SS VSF 223 as i keep reading the VTR barrel does Not like to be free floating as the factory stock holds the barrel to prevent harmonic issues... on the hunter stock no issues yet? have you tried reaching out further? curious :)

My VTR shoots tight groups with x51 lake city, and the holes touch when I shoot cheap hunting ammo. Accuracy is excellent.
You can't free float the varmint stock because it isn't pillar bedded that's why it touches the barrel, I swapped it with a hogue first thing.

I would keep that brake on. Resale value will likely be better if you try to sell it unaltered. I don't think it looks bad at all. As previously mentioned, some cerakote will make it look better.

As for the sling mounts, just order some M-LOK rails and/or QD points for the front. Use the footman's loops at the back. I used to have a Hunter 700 and I drilled out the sling points. It just doesn't look that great, especially at the back. The hole is very close to where the stock splits in half and I wouldn't trust it that way.

Great looking setup!

Group is very nice.

Stock is standard inlet size.

I hunt so have never been much into the 223 cartridge I find the cartridge anaemic past 150 yards on coyotes not saying it doesn't kill them saying I want to see them get smacked down instantly and the 223 just doesn't do it.

My loads are mostly 40gr V-Max topping out with 60gr bullets so not one that can help out for target shooting.

Not yet = haven't had time to shoot beyond 200 yards.

As to the barrel being free floated I've never heard of a Rem 700 type of barrel that is anymore prone to being free floated some need it others don't so I can't imagine an issue with a VTR barrel.

Nice. But that barrel and action is crying out for some flat black cerakote.

D*mn you = your right but I'd go satin black... There goes more monies... At least I have Frank at Hope Cerakote not to far away and he does excellent work.

I had Frank Cerakote my old Husqvarna 3000 in 270 Wby that my grandfather gave me barreled action in satin black and my replacement McMillan stock for it in OD green these two would sort of match then.

I need Magpul to come up with an insert or another stock that will properly fit a factory tapered barrel profile I'd buy one in SA and another in LA.
