Ive been looking at the new 700 VTR on rem site .
I had decided on 223 for my first varmit rifle.
The local gun shop has one in stock but its chambered in ruger 204.
Ive looked in all my loading data manuals and ruger204 is not listed.
My data manuals are all old enough to vote so I figger its new.
I am going to be shooting target mostly but Iam planing trip west to shot praire dogs/ground squirels.
Question is is 204 good for this also anybody shoot 700 VTR yet , how is it.

I'd avoid the VTR.

Considerations:

CZ-527 Kevlar
Remington VSSF II
Remington VSF
Remington XR-100 single shot
Remington LTR

Various Savage target models (I'm not that familiar with them)

the .204 is considered a better varmint round. However the .223 is easy to find match grade ammo/bullets for. I have 2 bolts actions in .223 and one in .204. They're both good rounds. The nod does however go to the .204 in terms of performance.

I missed the part about shooting target. If you are going to shoot past 200m then I would opt for a .223

Not as explosive on gophers but better with match bullets out to 1000yds.

The VTR is a sporting rifle. In 204 livery, it is deadly, fast, reasonably accurate and full of varmint killing testosterone.

As a target rifle, it sucks.
