Hi guys, received my 'new to me' Rem 700 XCR TLR .300WM the other day and looking forward to some range time in a couple of months...trying to decide which optics might work best for the ranges available to me. The most likely range with be the one in Stittsville Ont, with max 300 yards. There is the possibility of some day getting organized enough to use the military ranges at Connaught, just outside Ottawa where they apparently have up to 900 meters available on occasion.
My first question is: is 'more' always better when it comes to magnification? Or is it a balance between clarity and magnification. If we assume most of my shooting will be on the 300 yd. range then what would be a suitable magnification?
Of course, like most of us I don't have unlimited funds, and have been looking at the used Bushnell Elite Tactical line of scopes. I have no experience with the Vortex line, and have never looked thru one, but hear positive things from some members of the forum. I just can't rationalize the high end stuff, since I only make to the range about 6-8 times a year, ( 3hr drive round trip, $35.00 in gas alone ), but will pay for reasonable quality with solid backup from the manufacturer.
I don't plan on ever hunting with this gun, since carrying it much farther than from the truck to the bench rest would require a sherpa!
Cheers,
Jim
