Rem 700

I have an older Rem 700 in 223.
When I load the mag with the shells part way forward, the gun cycles perfectly. When the shells work their way to the back of the mag, the bolt can't catch them to feed the chamber.
Is there supposed to be a spacer in the mag to prevent this from happening?

YES there is supposed to be a spacer, about 3/8" in that magazine box. Can't remember what it's called, but my M700 .223 has one. I do remember making one out of a recycled cookie sheet (pssst, don't tell my wife ) and my tin cutters. That's not a very hard thing to do.... Hope this helps.

Any of the 700's in .223 that I've ever seen have a metal spacer at the back end of the magazine box... I'm assuming that since you're asking, yours might be missing??

Guido, it wasn't a 700, but I made one out of a piece of wood in about three minutes. Just glued it in place with five minute epoxy, and it is still in there.

Sometimes those spacers are pulled out to seat longer match bullets and perhaps get forgotten.
