Hi there,

I'm thinking of buying a rifle/scope combo for my first hunting rifle. Right now I'm looking at the Remington 710 and the Savage 111FCXP3. Just wondering which you would recommend and if you could give some pros and cons on both. I'm thinking of getting it in either 270 or 308.

Thanks!!!

Do a search on the 710, and you'll realize why you should pick the Savage.

Sure, some people who own the 710 like it, but it's generally considered a cheap piece of garbage. For the price, there are better options... like the Savage!

The Savage you mentioned is pretty good, I have one in 7mm Rem mag. They aren't available in 308 Win though, 243, 270, 30-06, 7mm Rem mag and 300 Win mag are your choices.

Do a search on this sight for "Rem 710" and you will find several threads on it. You can save yourself the time of reading them though, just re-read Jamie's post above. It summarizes the other threads quite well.

Yah do not buy a Rem 710 I've seen them on the used gun shelf at a few gun shops but as for the Savage I'm not a really big fan of Savage they are nice rifles but personally I would go with the Weatherby Vanguard Synthetic Package it comes with a nice case and like you said you want it in 308 and Weatherby has a accuracy guarantee to shoot 1 1/2 in or better with a 3 shot group from a 100 yards. Plus if you ever have problem with a Weatherby they have a great warrenty on them.

just for chits and giggles I think I am going to go down to wholesale this week and tell them I want a rem 710. I wanna see if they push it or say stay away from it.

should be fun:)

i looked at both to. i was looking for a cheap gun(not my first).i was leaning for the sav,but it didn't fit me as well, as the rem. i read all these post on gunnutz about the rem. and i still bought it. i works great. i don't think there is anything wrong with the 111,but i didn't buy one to compare, not yet. i have a 710 and like it very much.

Remington Arms Company, Inc. is voluntarily recalling a limited number of Model 710 bolt-action rifles as a result of its discovery, during routine test firing, that some Model 710 rifles manufactured between July and October 2002 may have been assembled with an improperly made "Safety Detent Spring." Although unlikely, there is a possibility that the manual safety arm mechanism in such a rifle could fail to fully return to the "safe" or "on" position.

Get the savage,

then get some good rings and a better scope.

I got a 111 in 300WM last year and it now has burris zee rings and a Bushnell 3200 elite.

shot 2 deer and a moose last fall with that rifle :)

I'm still working up a load for it but it shoots just fine with factory.

The adjustable trigger is easy to adjust and the removeable mag is a big bonus, unless you are one of those guys that lose mags :( :)

I've had a few savages over the years, and have shot, and played with one 710... Those who tell you tha the 710 is a good gun generally bought it as a first gun, and have their grandpa's enfield to compare it to...
THe savage will outshoot the Rem, will outperform the rem, will be lighter than the rem... the action is stronger than the rem..., your bolt wont flop around like a button on a ####house door like the rem... Trust me, I can go on for days...
You have allmost infinite stock/trigger/ barrel upgrades you can do to the savage, and I dont think ther is EVEN ONE aftermarket part for the 710...
Just ask those who like a 710 what they have compared it to for fit finish, balance etc...
Your question might not get answered...
The savage all the way...

Let us know how this goes, should be entertaining.:p

Will do. I might bring a fellow gunnut along as a witness. I am going ot act completely clueless and say a friend suggested the 710 because he owns one.

I will keep you posted!

this is what I found on the net for the 710

quote:

I have a 710 that's currently in pieces. After three years of shooting and hunting - with good success - the rifle started falling apart. First, the bolt stop failed and during a class I took last fall the bolt came out during an excersize and hit me in the chin. Painful and embarrasing. Next, I lost the threads on a scope rail screw. Managed to live with the first problem and fix the second in time for last hunting season in which I drew a great Elk tag. First day out the mag latch broke. Had to load the rifle from the top and couldn't get the mag out until I was back home. The good news is I dropped a nice 5x5 at 300 yards with one shot. The gun does shoot. But then I looked into replacing the mag latch, which should be a $2 part. Turns out Remmy doesn't sell the piece seperately, gotta buy the whole stock at $95. A local gunsmith is trying to the get the company to replace the stock under warranty for me. That's been two months ago, and no word back. Meanwhile, I've bougt a new rifle. It's not a Remmington. I'll use the 710 as a backup if I ever get it back together and shootin' straight again. Or maybe I'll trade it for a box of ammo....

And I was considering telling my cheap brother to pick one up....but not now

Well, unlike all these other guys, i won't be affraid to tell you not to buy a 710.:D

The savage is a far better rifle. But if I may be so bold, while the new Savage rifles have the accutrigger, you can get a Stevens 200 for about $200 less, with out the scope. You could then take that $200, and put it to a better quality scope, and live with the standard trigger which has worked pretty good for the last couple hundred years or so. The stevens also has an internal magazine, which is the type I prefer. No clips to lose up a mountain.
