Rem 710 vs. Savage 111FCXP3 combos

I've never tried a Savage that won't shoot better than that. The few that don't shoot as well as the majority do (both my stevens shot sub moa with cheapo factory ammo out of the box) are usually caused by pressure points between the stock and the receiver, a little sanding and all is good.

710 or Savage? Do you want a tent peg or a rifle?
 
I was looking at them both this weekend and the 710 feels like a toy gun. Very loose bolt and the plastic feels terrible. I am planning on going with a bit of a step up and spending a few extra bucks on some better quality. Possibly a Browning in 30-06.

Comes with a very decent Bushnell scope and has very low recoil. Short Length of pull though.
 
I love guns, generally never held a gun that I didn't appreciate in one way or another.

Then one day we were out plinking with a few other guys, all of us pulling guns out of cases and handing them around for a few shots, when a fella handed me his 'new Remington'.

The moment is etched in my mind as the first time I touched a gun and instantly went WTF is this POS? The second it hit my hand I didn't like it, I didn't even know what it was, I just though 'Remington?'. When I worked the action, the feeling got worse, way worse.

I remember taking three shots as to not insult the owner, then handed it back and asked, 'so what is that', he told me, 'it's a 710'.

No one else wanted to touch it. It was like they knew it had smallpox or something.

Garbaggio. Seriously.
 
Smallpox, no. Leperosy, yes. I'll be honest. I don't mind the feel of the rifle. It fits my stature well, and I have shot them. On each occasion, they were fairly accurate. The problem is when remington brought it out, they were aiming for a very large market that they almost had a monopoly on. But almost immediatly, the other companies brought out cheaper versions of their flagship models. Unfortunatly, remington wouldn't admit their 700 could be had for less than $900. Yes they had the ADL, but it was fairly bare bones. Now, you can have an SPS. Even the stainless model is still $400 less than the old 700 Stainless/Synthetic. Tell me manufacturing costs came down. The truth is they got caught with their pants down. The SPS will put the 710 away. They will just let it die a noble death.

I would personally go with a rifle/shotgun combo by Savage Arms. 270 or 308 are both good. I read a comparison on the 30-06 vs. the 270 and the 270 won. The 270 is flatter shooting has a variety of bullet weights and is great for deer, moose, bear etc. at longer distances than the 308. Both the 270 and 308 can be used for big game. I took my first deer with a 22LR. Most people are into overkill big guns, big scopes, big bullets etc. Follow your own instincts either one is a good choice. Overkill is not necessary!!!!
 
I looked at both the Remington and Savage potentially for my son's first rifle...by far the Savage is a better gun. Take the Remington 710 in your hands and really yank the bolt back fast, like if your excited at just shooting your first monster moose. Guess what? It jams right up! You have to work the bolt gently or it simply refuses to move! What a POS! Don't want that in my hands when a moose or bear is charging me!!!
 
Savage of course. .308 is hard to beat, especially if you're reloading, as with all US style .30 cal. bullet selection is unmatched. .270 is considered better by some for long range shooting. This is as you say your first hunting rifle go with the .308, 111 are long action (30-06 and up) 11 are short action package series, e.g. 308 family.
Nevermiss, is it legal to kill deer in Ontario with rimfire? and why the hell would you brag about acting like a meat-head?

The .270 will shoot flatter. But not enough that'll you'll even notice. I think Savagefan is right here, go .308. Plenty flat out to 300 yards, low recoil, excellent bullet selection and will work on most of the biggest critters that walk here. Don't get me wrong, I love the .270. But if were comparing tradgectories, I'm just saying the .270 won't outperform the little .308 out to most responsible ranges.
