Are they seriously the definitive jam-o-matic? I've two friends who both owned and shot 740's for many years and never had a problem. Are they really that bad? Do handloads cause the bulk of the "supposed" problems? Hmmm.

The worst rifle that I have ever owned. First shot out of a brand new 7400 synthetic stock 30-06 carbine would not eject. Same with the second, third, fourth, fifth, etc.

I sent the gun back for a new one. The new one ejected but had a failure to feed on every 3rd or 4th shot.

If I pushed the mag a little too hard into place, the the rear of the mag would slip past the front of the trigger assembly jamming the entire action.

I had to pop the trigger assembly out in order to remove the mag.

Sent it to a Remington warranty repair shop. Waited for over 8 month's to get it back.

Mag problem fixed but continues to jam on about every 7 or 8 rounds now.

If you use handloads for any semi-auto rifle especially a 7400 series you need to full length resize your brass with a small base die.

I've had a 740 in 30-06 for years, Only had 2 stoppages with it. I make sure to clean the gas block and chamber after every 20 rounds or so though. I use IMR 4064 for my handloads and have never had a stoppage with those. Saying all that mine really doesn't get used to much anymore and it definatley wouldn't be the gun I would choose for my primary hunting rifle now.

The early models with 19 locking lugs and the ejector from hell... were just horrid... the 742's with the recievers that did not get properly heat treated are the worst offenders... wear out the rails and throw them in the trash. The 7400's are a much better design... but the quality control is the worst in the industry. I would say half of them come back with ejection problems...
The latest Quality issue I have seen is with the magazines... four out of five of these are so badly made that the rifles will not function!!!
Over a Million Remington Semi's made.... 800,000 are now single shots!

In my case yes. My Remington Semi-auto Model 742 30-06 works fine with factory ammo but the handloads don't chamber properly. They work fine in my Springfield M1903 though. My die is a Bonanza. So far on my other caliber's I use RCBS or Lyman dies.

With semis it's best to use a small base die. My old 742 was quite accurate but temperamental in very cold weather and I got more than a few bleeding owies from the bolt handle or whatever it's called. A high mountain rifle it aint.

I have owned Quite a few of them and also hunted with alot of people who use/used them. The ones I have seen the most problems with are in 30-06.Why?Not quite sure.

Oddly enough the votes are 9 to 9 if you put "Suck" and "Not Good" together against "Good" and "Great" together. At this point I figured it would be almost all "Suck" after most of what I've heard about them...

I had a 7400 in 30 06 never jammed once! I sold it to Doug I don't know if he had any problems or not! I wouldn't turn down a good priced one if I needed it.

Dave.

I have a model 742 in 30-06, works like a charm. My friend has an older model and it jams now, never did before. He hasn't cleaned it in 25 years.... Seems like that may be the problem...

7400

Hi, I had one in 35 Whelen, never had a problem but only put a couple of boxes through it. Sold to, of course, Mr. 35 calibre.

Arch:)

My daughter and her husband went hunting together this year,he has a BLR in .243 so I let her use my Rem 742 in .243!

I had just bought it and had only one day to sight in the scope(you guessed it the windiest day ever) at one hundred yards on a two foot round wooden wheel for a target .

It started grouping right off about 1 inch apart, six inches left of center!!

I clicked right till I had a shot close to dead center, then took a shot at a soup can lid at the same distance(hit it bottom left)!

Since it was dead on windy I decided to stop waisting shells!!

I told her it was close and they had better take it to the range before hunting!

They hunted for three weekends ,and never got anything!

On thier last day out everybody gave up ,but before they went home someone set up a one litter jug at 120 yards!

The guys took shots at it (.308's)30/30's and such ,she says let me try!!

You guessed it she popped it first shot!!!!! She didn't know then about eye distance to scope(she does now)!

So I think I just lost a rifle!!!!!!
