rem 742 problem and solution, opinions wanted

I have very little personal experience with these rifles. But given how many 740/742/7400 rifles have been sold, there must be some people, somewhere, who are satisfied with them. They can't all be junk.

Thanks for the help everyone and once again I apologize for my second post. I had it out this weekend and it worked flawlessly, I said rails, bu tI think the proper term was action bars. the cross bolt which is in the forestock at the end of the bars that the piston moves down to cycle the action.

Only problem is when I shot it this weekend I was over 12 inches high, finished off at 3 inches high sighting in last weekend, I probably ended up banging the scope around when I was fiddling with the file. Another weekend with almost 20 rounds through the '06 and thsi after firing almost 20 3.5 inch goose loads out of my 12 gauge, top that off with the puck I got in my shooting shoulder the night before and my shoulder was plenty sore.

I am still a little concerned about how well that crossbolt is gonna hold, but with moose in a few days no time to change, other concern is how it was hitting way high on monday, I want to do another shoot if I have a chance before moose, would switching from Winchester to remington 180 grain ammo have caused this, I went to winchester premuum again after going through some of the cheap remingtons it was hitting were the remingtons were.

thanks

dave

these semi were trouble from the get go .another problem is the bolt head tears notches in receiver and they constantly jam open or jam closed my advise is get ride of it and buy a rem pump

There was reference to the receiver being made of aluminum, if there is any, I haven't seen them. The rifle when new, worked, but the design caused the problems that are inherent to the rifle. Kind of like trying to keep a British car working in Northern Ontario, you can keep throwing good money at it, but it's going to calf when you really need it. It's probably best to part it out and buy something else.
The "crossbolt" that you speak of is...?

You can use your 742 as a paddle and buy yourself a new gun. Those guns are not worth the agony and headache they cause.Sure hope for you that you get your dilemma worked out before your moose hunt.
