Picked one of these up recently. Was gonna mainly use it as a deer gun, but may carry it from time to time for moose. Any suggestions/advice on loads. Thx.

Dave.

it's been awhile since i reloaded for my .300 savage ( based on the modle 99 savage lever action ) .

for powders , my rifle really liked imr 4064 and nosler balistic tips in 150 and 165 grain seated just off the lands of the rifling ( basicly as far out as the magazine would let me )
hornady 165 boattails worked very well too .

i normally use mag primers

after the cases had been fired at least once in the rifle , i would only neck size the neck around 75- 80% , leaving a small portion of the neck not touched by the dies .
if you do this make sure the ammo you reload still functions through your rifle .
if it's is too tight , have the case move father into the die till it chambers properly .
avoid resizing the shoulder .

my first moose was shot with this rifle .
bullets for moose , i'd go with 165 grain partions , or barnes x bullet .

if you use the barnes bullet make sure your barrel is dead smooth and clean , or the barel will foul with copper very easily causing very large groupings

I'd be loading 150gr or 165gr Interlocks. Skip the premiums, as most are designed to expand at higher velocities than the .300 Savage can provide...

+1 on Blargon's post. My rifle likes Varget but honestly it seems to shoot well with just about any of the moderate speed powders. Just keep the case lube off of the neck when resizing as the sharp angled shoulder get lube bubbles very easily.

Check the Hogdon site for loads.

Triton,is that the one I pointed you to?
They're a fairly rare bird in 300 Sav. I understand.
My buddies brother has one that his Grandpa gave him and he's looking for a mag marked 300 Savage if you or anyone else reading runs across one.
