REM 7600 carbine in .338-06 questions

I'm thinking of getting a synthetic stocked 7600 carbine in 30-06 to convert to .338-06.

Has anyone done this conversion yet? How would it be done, screw on a new barrel?

Would the short carbine barrel negate the ballistic advantages od the .338-06 cartridge for this rifle as a short range, thick bush, rainy day BC muley and moose rifle?
 
Providing you can find a 'smith to do it, I don't think it would be a major job. Fitting a new barrel to the Remington tenon, cutting the chamber, headspacing and possibly re-working the magazine for the larger bullet.
 
In truth it wouldn't do anything the same rifle in 35 Whelen wouldn't do. The only advantage the 338-06 has over the Whelen is when distances get out past 250 yards. At ranges under that the larger bullets of the Whelen have a bit more "thump".

Look around and I think you will find buying a used 7600 in 35 Whelen and would cost a lot less than the buying a 7600 and then spending another $600.00 - $800.00 to have it re-barreled.

IF i was going to do a 30-06 to 338-06 conversion though I would look at having the existing barrel re-bored to 338 and them replaced on the rifle. That should be the only work required to do the conversion.

I personally think you're better off finding a 35Whelen in a 7600, but hey, what ever blows yer hair back!! :dancingbanana:
