Here's a few pointers about this rifle from Remington. First, my gunsmith turned me on to it and told me to also check out the positive review by Mystic. My gunsmith did a pretty thorough tear down job on the gun and was impressed generally with it. I gave this beast a break in period and tore it down as far as I risk it. I like that the bolt and mag disassemble easily. The trigger weight can be adjusted and I brought mine down to just short of 3 lbs. Trigger breaks clean. Given the budget price point, I put on Weaver bases and EZEE rings lying around my loading bench. Topped it with a Leupold VX2, CDS, 3-9 x 42. Haven't weighed the rig but would put it around 7 3/4 lbs.

This is no piece of gunsmithing art, to be sure. It is a tool and has maybe had some encounters with the ugly tree along it's design path!! Some of the short cuts make me cringe, but, that said, it's lines are not too bad and everything functions well. Proof is on the range, right? Well, I managed to get a couple loads to shoot quite impressively, as shown below. I plan on removing the blade safety from the trigger and maybe filling the butt stock with foam insulation to quiet it down. This will make a good range, truck and back-up gun.

This is the 783 camo stock in 308.

47.5 gr Win 748, Fed 210, Win case full length sized, Hornady 150 gr SST @ 2850 fps.

This one needs some explanation. The hole to the left is from another group. The ragged hole in the centre has 3 shots in it! 45.3 gr RL15, BR2, Win case, 150 gr SST. Mild shooting @ 2715 fps.

More of the W748/150 SST load.

Nice trigger control on that one fer sure. Ain't it nice when a pet load turns out so well? I like these 783's as they are a strong, accurate platform on which to tinker up some very nice performing rifles in a wide range of chamberings.

I heard your gunsmith was messing around with one of them in .243, went to true the action up and there was nothing to cut as it was dialed too close to bother with.

Like you proved they seem to be darn good shooters if a guy doesn't mind cheap and not so refined :)

Good shootin

I bought one in .243 a few months ago to use as a coyote and deer rifle. Prints 1" groups with Winchester 100gr Super X ammo which is all I'll ever need from it. They're a great buy, especially when there's a sale and/or rebate on for them.

They are the best budget rifle in the $400-$500 range no doubt. Miles ahead of what you get with an Axis.

I picked one up in .223 new for $399 and couldn't get the darn thing to shoot under 3MOA.

I ditched the scope and put on a beat up Millet 6-25x56 LRS, then I properly free-floated the barrel with a dowel and some drywall sandpaper.

I zeroed at 25 yards for 100 yards in short order.
I only had a dozen rounds (cheap Tulammo 55 gr.)with me so I used the last four to shoot the thumbtacks on the target.

I love this rifle.

;)

Damn it, you guys are gonna make me buy a 783 in .308 for a beater rifle.

(Don't want to purchase one with that crappy scope though, waste of money).

Wait until you shoot one in 300 Win Mag! Factory 180 gr ammo runs a bit over 3000 fps out of the factory 24" barrel, and shoots under an inch.

I tried the cheap 3-9X40 scope that came with the 300 Win Mag, and it survived. Then put it on a 243 Win. It continues working fine...... so far.

I have the 783 in .270 and so far so good, even with the cheap provided scope. Looking to upgrade on the scope before deer season but I don't know if I want to mess with a good thing
