But where is the mystique of a model seven ? The 788 is a classic.
Might as well just buy a 24" Whelen, like a CDL
That 788 is a nice rifle. I had that idea about 10yrs ago, but just hadn't got to it yet. A 20" Model Seven is another good option.

The 788 that was rebored by Smith for a friend , and that i bedded and shot recently, produced:
with factory 200 gr silvertips (old) , 3 shot cloverleafs at 100 yd (with scope) , velocity was low 2500s (if memory serves)
Trying to work up a load with 250 gr round noses / spitzers at present. Working with BCL2 and H-335. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Have loaded 45 gr of Ball C2 with 250 gr Speer spitzers in a number of 358s for years: 2250 to 2300 fps, depending on barrel length, it is very accurate in all of them, puts game down quickly and brass lasts forever.

-- when you used the 250 gr spitzers, were the in a short box mag like the 788? -- i worry that the extra length of the spitzer would intrude into the capacity too much for effective reloading, the 250 rn fit nicely into the mag

We use that load in two 358s with short mag boxes; a Rem 600 and a model 7 with no problems there at all.
The 600 puts that load into 3/4" groups most of the time at 2250 fps out of an 18 1/2' barrel. Bert has used it for the past 25+ years and has killed several tons of really big game with it.
My wifes's 20" Shilen barreled Model 7 gets 2300 fps and shoots into an inch.............every time!
