Might as well just buy a 24" Whelen, like a CDL
That 788 is a nice rifle. I had that idea about 10yrs ago, but just hadn't got to it yet. A 20" Model Seven is another good option.

While I DO like the 788, I don't find it any more mystifying than the Model Seven.But where is the mystique of a model seven ? The 788 is a classic.![]()
The 788 that was rebored by Smith for a friend , and that i bedded and shot recently, produced:
with factory 200 gr silvertips (old) , 3 shot cloverleafs at 100 yd (with scope) , velocity was low 2500s (if memory serves)
Trying to work up a load with 250 gr round noses / spitzers at present. Working with BCL2 and H-335. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Hi, after a long awaited trial with the Remington 788 in .358, I finally got out to shoot it.It cycled just like butter on a hot knife. No jams, malfunctions etc... All was perfect.
