Picked up a NIB 788 (308)from CGN thing shoots minute of barn, tired of buying 30.00 boxes of ammo for crap results, what works for the select few out there ????????

Appears to be adequate clearance, I can shimmy a 5 dollar bill back to the action 0 probs, I dragged it out to the range expecting it to perform like my 700P instead my ol' 762 K98 out shot it :(

Try bedding it. I'm thinking that NIB over a span of 30 plus years, the wood has dried out real good. Check the action screws, make sure they are snug but not overtight.
What grain of bullet are you using?

788 accuracy?

I haven't heard of many of these that wouldn't shoot. One problem is weight of trigger pull it can be lightened. Bedding the action will help as in most rifles.

Iron sights or scope? (If that's not a stupid question!). I'm just wondering if you have considered all the things that can go wrong, damaged crown, bad riflings, loose sights or scope mounts, defective scope, loose stock. How bad is it shooting?

It may take a while to figure it out. Try one step at a time, bedding, crown, torque on the action screws, different ammo (try Remington Cor-Lokt's).

I have a remington 788 in 308. It is one of the most accurate rifles that I have ever shot.

bought a 6mm years ago, the front action screw would'nt tighten up enought. Bedding action was cure.

Four inch groups are disappointing, but if everything else checks out, I concur, try bedding it. Before you go that route though, it might be worth playing around with barrel shims to see if a change in the pressure point helps or hurts.

Having said that the scope is new, I assume it is also untried. You might want to try a proven scope on that thing to ensure it is indeed a rifle problem.

If you handload, 41 grs of H-4895 with any good 180 gr game bullet should produce good to excellent accuracy in a .308.

I was just going to say the same thing. Just because it's a new scope doesn't mean it's not faulty. You could be having parallax issues. I'd try swapping out the scope for another and trying again.

I'd check the scope and the mounts first. Remove, check, and retighten the mounts. Make sure a screw is not bottoming out before it tightens. Do the same thing with the rings. Then try a different scope. After you have proved the mounts/rings/scope are good, look at bedding etc. More times than not, these issues are mount/scope related in my experience.

They do have a cult like following, I traced my 'vin' and it came back to 1974, they discontinued the series in 1983, allegedly they were stealing a fair market share of the (more expensive) 700 line and it was decided to put it out too pasture:(

+1 on the shims in the barrel channel.
