Rem 798

Looked at one at a last week, in 06. Looked like a plain MarkX in a decent laminated stock. The idiot at the counter told me how they're not much good as they're old tech and there's way better designs now. Funny thing, there's a hundred guns on the rack and I want to see the Mauser action and he proceeds to tell me it's no good. Stocks look like the old ADL design, I was not allowed to touch it because I didn't have my lisc. with me. As I'm paying for my bullets and primers I notice the guys dealing with some clown who has been handling/pointing an AR15. Turns out the guy has no lisc. didn't think he needed one as he is ex-military. Anyway picture a Mark X in a laminated stock.

I read that they are basically the exactly the same as the old Interarms (I think I got the name right), that also used to import Czech built rifles. What I understand is they are a M-98 clone, a bit rough but with lots of potential if you want to tweak them a bit.

Plus you can get magnum calibers; .375H&H, .458WM. I think one of these could make an excellent DGR with a bit of work.

I read somewhere that Remington imports the barreled action, "cleans them up" (whatever that means), and puts them in laminate stocks made in the US. I believe they were also imported by Charles Daly.

Remington also charges just a litttle more than Charles Daly for the privilege of owning a rough-as-hell commercial mauser. Might be a nice starting point... if there weren't already Ruger and Kimber with better fit and finish, and sporter mausers for less $$, and the BRNO if you want a big big CRF for DG. I'm sure there's a niche there somewhere if you look hard enough...

Stupid gun shop. I could walk into anywhere when I was 16 and unlicensed and look at a rifle if I wanted to. All I had to do was ask. After all, being across the counter, they're pretty much your direct supervision, no? Obviously the guy was being an ass, but no legal reasons for it either.

Remington 798

I bought one six months ago in 30-06 cal., all I have to say is that I am very happy with the performance of this rifle that is made in Serbia by Zastava. Stocks are made and assembled in the USA. Then Remington just engraves there name on the reviever.
So far it likes 150 gr. federal, where I got a 5 shot one hole group @100 yards, and Remington 180gr. Corelokt gave me an average of 1" or better @100 yards. All gun magazines give it a thumbs up. Put about 150 rds very reliable! It has a hinged magazine, very handy when unloading.

The only complaint about the gun is the heavy (7lbs) and long trigger pull, but I got my gun smith to fix that for me.

Bass Pro in Toronto got them on for sale for $599.00, for a well made gun with a mauser action you can't beat that.

If a fellow wanted to build a custom 9.3X62 or a .375 Ruger looks like that rifle would be a good starting point. Lots of the CRF actions are getting pricey. All you would need on that one is a bedding job (I think we can take it on faith the Remington did that wrong) a new barrel, and a set of sights, then scope it and you're set for around $1500.00.

Congrats on your new gun. Gotta love a new gun that shoots factory ammo that well.

But at 7 lbs. I would not consider that gun heavy.(more ideal for that caliber.)

Especially one built off a m98 type action. IMO

I believe that he was posting that the trigger pull was 7 lbs and long.

$599 is a pretty good deal for a brand new Mauser considering you could pick up an SPS in .30-06 for the same price.
