REM 870 barrel fit

Yes, provided the barrel ring is in the same place, some older Wingmaster barrels are only chambered for 2 3/4” shells but that won’t affect fitting one to your 870p. A newer 870 28” vent rib barrel will shoot 2 3/4” and 3” shells, you might want that if you get into waterfowl hunting but for trap and skeet 2 3/4” is fine.
870 Wingmaster barrels will fit on 870 Police receivers !!!!
There were some Special Purpose and Express barrels built for a longer magazine tubes .... those will not fit.
In general .... if the barrel is blued and polished .... it is likely a Wingmaster barrel.
If the barrel has a matte bluish finish ..... then it is likely and Express/Police/Special Purpose barrel.

You can only shoot a 12ga shell length that is supported by both ... the receiver and the barrel!!
For example I bought an 870 Wingmaster 200th Anniversary Edition. The barrel is stamped that it supports 12ga 3 1/2 inch shells. However, the receiver can only handle 3 inch shells. As a result I can only shoot up to 3 inch shells out of that gun ...

No Police model has a matte blue finish. They’re either parkerized or the same gloss blue as a Wingmaster.
Any standard barrel from an Express or Wingmaster will work on a Police. There are exceptions of course such the Tactical 7rd version already alluded to as well as others such as the Special Field which has a shorter magazine tube. Barrel thickness isn’t a factor as they’re all the same diameter where they enter the receiver.

Leg, he is looking for a longer barrel for trap shooting .... maybe 26", 28" 30" .... A blued barrel in that length ..... would that be a Police barrel?
And once he found a barrel somewhere ... how will a newbie figure out if he is facing a parkerized Police barrel or an Express matte blued barrel?
I guess the answer is simple .... whatever he finds in that length ... 26", 28" 30" .... if it is a polished shiny blue ... it is likely a Wingmaster barrel. If it is a matte finish .... it is likely an Express barrel. Given that it is an original Remington barrel and not some third party barrel like Hastings, Carlson, etc ....
Anyhow, any 870 barrel in that length category should fit on his 870 Police receiver!

I was not trying to suggest that a polished blued 26” barrel was made for a Police Magnum. Simply pointing out that matte blue barrels are not Police models. It was really for the benefit of others who may have seen your comment about matte blue barrels being for Express, Police, Special Purpose. I’ve seen people list matte blued barrels as Police when they aren’t. I’ve even seen them refer to matte blued barrels as parkerized which they clearly are not.
Will they fit, yes. I believe I said as much.
I’m not a trap shooter but I would assume that any vent rib in the lengths you mention would work just fine. He never said what finish is on his Police model but if it’s blued than a Wingmaster barrel would suit it quite well. If parkerized it doesn’t really matter as neither will match but they’ll certainly work.
