Rem 870 LEO top-folders -- really that bad?

easy - could i trouble you to measure the OAL from the tip of the barrel to the back of the (folded) stock where the bolt goes please? (not to the mag extension).
trying to figure out what the min length barrel you can use with these is, and how much shorter it would be folded than a short LOP stock/12.5 barrel.

No trouble at all. I'm happy to do it. :)

Following the bore axis red line in the diagram below ...

firearmoalpng.png

... my 18" with the top folder measures exactly 28 3/8". That's to the tip of the bottom back of the pistol grip. It extends 1/4" more from where the screw fits.

I don't much care for barrels shorter than 14", so 14" barrels are my shortest and I have one with a Remington Youth Stock installed which measures 33 1/4" from butt to tip of the barrel.

A 14" barrel with the top folder is too short for non-restricted. It measures 24 1/8". However, I believe that if you manufacture an extension long enough to make up for the OAL difference, you'd be in business. Of course, you could add length to the rear too. Length needs not necessarily be added to the barrel.

many thanks.
a 12.5" barrel with a hogue short LOP stock is just over 30".
so it seems that the shortest non-restricted barrel you can use the LEO top folder with is the 18" barrels, and itll be around 2" shorter - so not much of a difference. so i think for a practical packing gun i may be better off with the full stock.

i still want an LEO top folder though, not sure why i just do. going to look around for one on the EE and put together another 870.

BTW - how IS OAL measured?
i always went with the bore axis type of measurement, as opposed to measuring to the tip of the buttstock, rather to be safe than sorry. but does anyone know the 'official' way?

OAL length is measured as the red line in the above diagram shows, along the bore axis as you state, from both extreme points.

I think I know why many people like the REM top folder and don't know it. ... It's the closest you'll get to a SPAS 12 look. :D

The Choate top folder has asingle bar, unlike the ATI or REM stock. I bought one for my Mossberg and tried it. With only the single bar and the way it's shaped it just didn't fit comfortably. Also when folded the butt plate does not lay down flat like the others, it depends on a very weak spring, and if you aren't careful you wind up with the stock folded and the buttplate sticking up in the air.

That is a nice foregrip on the top pic - is it stock or aftermarket?

That's the MCS forearm from Remington, they used to be available as a separate item but that's no longer the case. There are a few of them out but they cost a bunch due to the limited availability.

I don't find them that bad but could they be just a bit shorter? I find the LOP too long with winter clothes; maybe I'll have to modify mine.
Also couldn't they design a new light alloy version with a magnesium handle instead of that brittle plastic? seems it's beginning to date.
PP.

I put one on my 870 a few months ago and I won't lie, I thought it was going to suck for skeet shooting but I have had no probs with it. It's comfortable to me and I can put 2 guns in a case now. Besides, it looks freekin kool and it scares the zombies away.

I have a older late 70's vintage i've fallen on the pistol grip on ice didn't hurt anything but my ribs i also put a recoilpad on mine by cutting the center out of the recoil pad so it fits over the sight when its folded up i shoot 00 and slugs no big deal

... and I intended the wooss comment in a jovial way of course. I'm sure you noticed the emoticons. Yes? :D

You bet! You are a one of the good guys easy...Even without the emoticons I would have taken it that way (or assumed it was just a bad day lol)

These have a brutally long LOP that gets much worse when using armor and LBE.

This is a valid point that I forgot. I barely find it comfortable and I have monkey length arms, as in the longest off the rack shirt (37"?) is almost two inches too short. Those with shorter arms won't like them at all...

You are right sir. My (now prohib should I reassemble it) 16" barrel with the LEO folder came in at 663mm OAL. That doesn't leave any extra to put a shorter barrel (well 1/8" lol)...

663mm if you measured properly is still non-restricted by 3mm.

i had no idea they made factory 16" barrels. then i stand corrected - 16" is the shortest barrel length you can use with these.
where did you get the 16" barrel?

rem top folder

I've used nearly every type of 870 stock available.

Currently own 11 different "tactical" versions of 870's.

I too was lured by the appearance of the Remmy LEO top folder.
Bought one in good shape quite a while ago.

Fawkin' thing is ridiculous!
Unusable ergo's, recoil makes any practical accuracy impossible.
Pistol grip material is made of auto trim material from the 50's.....brittle/weak/slippery and sharp as hell when it does break.

There are so many better options available now fortunately.

I have a Choate top folder that is similar in design but uses a nylon PG that is world better than the Remmy.

I found the only endearing feature to these stocks other than the obvious portability is carrying them by the stock when folded. Gun carries like an AR carry handle right at the balance point of the gun.

I use a 14in 870 with a short LOP conventional stock now as a portable plane/boat/pack gun.
Pretty much as small and Wayyyyy more shootable.

Look closely at my avitar and you'll see one of my 870's with this stock and a Bayo mounted.
Great fun with the snobs on the Trap field! LOL

Not quite. There was an isolated issue with 16" barrels a short time ago.

Give the following thread a read, a bit long, but it'll clarify the 16" barrel issue for you better than I can explain it in one post.

Yeah what he said...:D

Suffice to say the only lengths a Rem barrel can be are 14" and 18" legally at this time. Dlask made units are cool though, this is just factory Rem I'm talking about.

Really too bad. At 663mm the gun was very portable. The 18" Grizz I bought to replace it not so much. I've got a plan to rebarrel it 12.5" Dlask style and put an AR stock adapter on it. That should only be ~750mm so I'll only increase the length marginally and still stay non-res...

I have one. Man up and learn how to shoulder the shotgun properly and nothing will hurt. If you're going to shoot your shotgun like a biathlon rifle, I feel no sympathies for your sore shoulder. These top folders are the coolest ones out there. If you can find one, you should buy it.

I have shot literally hundreds of rounds out of 870's with the top folder with either SSG or slugs. I was very happy when the RCMP went away from those things. Personally, I think they are not a viable option.
