I am just curious as to how stiff the magazine spring has to be. I have the HD version with the 2 shot extender on it. It requires a good push to get the shell locked into the tube.

The spring on the standard capacity mag is the same length as the magazine and isn't under any tension when it is unloaded. On the 7 shot one the spring is under a good deal of tension with no shells loaded. I take it that it is due to the extra force required to push those 2 extra shells but does it need to be that stiff?

How many 3" shells can you fit in the tube? You need to be able to fit six 3" shells in a tube with a two round extention installed.

It doesn't matter how long the spring is compared to the length of the magazine and never mind the tension. An extra power spring will be longer than a conventional spring for a given extention, but you'll still be able to fit the amount of shells the gun is designed for. If it doesn't, you've got the wrong spring happening.

This is the factory one that comes with the 870 2 shot extension. I do not have any 3 inch shells to test but I can pretty much fit a half of another shell into the magazine so the spring compresses to the right size. It is just very stiff and was wondering if that was normal cause it looks like others have such an easy time loading the magazine.

It sounds like the 7 shot spring is an extra power spring, maybe the same item that comes with the 7 shot P model. Even if that's not the case a longer spring is probably going to be than much stiffer anyway considering it has greater inertia and friction to overcome.

Think it will loosen up a bit over time? I have it loaded with dummy rounds right now in hopes it will get a little lighter.

It is strong enough to where sometimes if you don't fully feed the shell it will shoot back at you.

It's probably not going to soften up any time soon but it would be a simple matter to cut it down a bit.
