I know it is an odd comparison as one is a pump and one is a semi, but my question is about reliability. How does the 930 hold up? I am asking because I am thinking of selling an 870 to get the extra cash for a 930, but don't want to regret it. I would be using it for hunting so a jam could mean missing out on dinner!

Might as well be comparing a Cooey 88 to a 930.
I have both. In a "SHTF" scenario the 930 is the one I'm taking. The 870 doesn't compare when it comes to fire power. The all steel receiver talk doesn't matter to
Me.
I can load the 930 faster and of course dump it.
I can follow through shots better with the 930.
The 930 will cycle any crap I put through it.
The 870 can legally hold more ammo and has more common accessories.

Right on brutha!.

The 930 would be my reach for gun each and every time should a need arise.

Some 930s have a tendency to not cycle light loads fresh out of the box. Mine was such an example, but a few rounds of magnum slugs takes care of that problem. Nary a hiccup anymore.

haha I realize I should have asked this in the hunting section, or those are the sickest hunting rigs I have seen! You can skin the dear with the shotgun bayonet I guess! I guess I am really asking about the frequency of jams.

Funny, I am considering my first shotgun, and have long considered buying a 870 pump. But am curious about a semi too, and given my budget, I had been looking into the 930 (just a half hour before finding this thread!) So I hope to hear more opinions and reviews of these guns here. Thanks for reading my mind OP!

I'd be all over a 930 if they had more options as far as buttstocks, I find the factory conventional stock too long, too slick and too cheap feeling for my liking. Something like a 13" LOP Hogue overmolded would be perfect.

The hogue stocks are great, unfortunately the only Mossberg line up they make kit for is for the 500.

Aimpro was considering offering a special 13" LOP Hogue for both the 500 series and the 930, I wonder what became of that? Unfortunately they're notoriously hard to contact so its tough to say whether its a go or not.

The 930 has very limited selection of buttstocks (only one other I know of by Choate)

Because it has that long buffer tube in the rear, noone wants to make one.

As for jams, since "breaking it in" I haven't had a single failure with Wally mart #4 loads or Range and Field #7.5.

9 Reasons to proceed back the way you came.

Remington 870 Wingmaster, Synthetic Remington Stock, 18.5" barrel, Remington Buttstock Shell Holder, 8+1 shot Mag Extension, Federal #8 Target Load "Cure for Cancer" Shells

...Yeah, my feet are ugly.

Cools shells, no comments about the feet :)

It's a little known fact, but you can ghost load the 930 and that gives you 8 rounds of 2 3/4 shells.

Soooo only one reason to go back :D

You can only ghost load 7, and its kinda hard to do in a hurry.

For me, if it hits the fan, Im grabbing the 870.

" Uhhh.....sorry guys...."ghost load"????? "

Ghost load is having an extra round basically in the feed hole, on top of the feed lifter, but not actually inside the magazine. With one round also in the barrel, it gives you a 5 + 1 + 1 (7 total) shots to start out with.

On top of the "Feed Lifter"?
You mean the elevator? I'm calling MALARKY as that would most certainly jam upon operating the pump after the first shot.
I don't have much experience with the 930 but, in the 870 that would 100% jam after the first shot.

The most you could do is tube capacity plus one in the chamber which in the case of my 870 is 8+1.

The 930 from what I've read/been told is a great shotgun, that being said, I'd still grab my 870, I just trust it more. We'll see if my decision changes when my 930 arrives at the door, and I can put 100 rounds down range without a hiccup!

Thats what most would think, but in fact it is true.

Keep in mind he is in the US with a 7 rnd tube.

The 930(and Benelli M4 for that matter) will not load from the tube with a shell on the lifter.

The one thing that I don't like about the 930 is if you accidently bang/depress the bolt/mag release it will dump 2 shells on the lifter jamming it pretty good. I know the solution is NOT to hit it, but if it can happen it probably will.
