rem 870 vs mossberg 930

The one thing that I don't like about the 930 is if you accidently bang/depress the bolt/mag release it will dump 2 shells on the lifter jamming it pretty good. I know the solution is NOT to hit it, but if it can happen it probably will.

I had to test this out for myself this morning and it's true, with a full tube empty elevator it will dump 1.3 rounds onto the elevator effectively causing a catastrophic failure.

Very interesting. As a side note, I've never hit the bolt release accidentally during competition either by crawling, running, or barricade shooting. It is something I will watch for though.

I have both a pump and a semi and considerable time on both (A 590A1 SPX a 930 SPX, granted, it's not an 870, but it is where my experience lies)

The 590 being pump, will cycle as fast as you can cycle and pretty much everything as it is under "muscle power"

What the 930 has over the 590 (or any pump for that matter) is matched reliability. Initially, there were some FTE's, but after some research, it needed to be broken in with 3" magnum slugs. Since then, there have been no FTE's on Walmart #4's to Federal #7.5's. Absolutely none (this shooting alongside Benelli's and Remington 1187's that did)

Forged aluminum receiver means lighter weight means faster handling. With the 18.5" barrel, it feels shorter than it is. It very well balanced and quite lively.

Gas operated means lower recoil for faster follow-up shots. There is no comparison in this field.

The 930 trigger pull is sublime compared to anything offered by the 590 or the 870. It is light and crisp. Couple this with the low recoil and your follow up shots are even faster.

To be fair, in a pinch, you can get the 7x 2 3/4" rounds into the gun (6 in the tube, +1 in the pipe) with practice, you can ghost load decently fast with 8 rounds (6 in the tube, +1 on the tray, +1 in the pipe) I have covered this in another thread and it is fully legal as it will only hold 5x 3" shells in the tube.

I still like the 930 pro's versus the cons against the pump despite being down one or two rounds because I love my 930 and I trust it absolutely :)

Hmmm. I tried it in my wingmaster to no avail! Can it be done in an 870?

nope. when the slide moves it trips the shell latch dumping another round out. So if you had an extra one there it just jammed up.

Ghost loading is a neat little trick but I think its pretty useless in the real world. I am a firm believer in an empty chamber while carrying a firearm hiking/hunting etc so I would never actually do this. Looks like the thing to do for many types of competitive shooting though.

HAHAHAHAHA... you should rfetry this in the hunting section.... 870 would get the edge I bet....lol... I locve my 870 and have for the last 17 years.... I used it yesterday

I appreciate the input from everyone, not sure ill be ghost loading while chasing wabbits.

Side note, does anyone know if a 935 barrel is interchangeable with a 930?

If you need more than a baikal single at 130 bucks to hunt wabbits... you should stay home and play cabelas huntin' on the wii

Dear Brad,

You are new here, obviously. You also obviously have much to offer the tactical shotgun forum, so forgive me for saying this, but maybe you should stay in the hunting sections. Please. As in, go there now. They really need you.

Best Regards,
Jeff

I appreciate your offer to purchase this for me. I will pm my address once you send me the serial number and your PAL so I can initiate the transfer. I do not have a different shotgun for every animal. If I am shotgun hunting, I use my one shotgun.

No, its not interchangeable. I guess your still looking for a barrel?

lol yup, found one place but damn they are expensive and it will take a long time for them to get it in.

I have owed a 930 for some time now. It has always been very reliable and will cycle anything. Even the cheap target loads. It's fast handling and accurate enough with slugs for hunting purposes.

I can guaranty if you buy one you will not be disappointed.

I've also never had a problem hitting the bolt release and dumping shells out of the tube.

dude....ur really comparing orange vs apple here. if ur talking about reliability, a pump will always be more reliable than a semi-auto in 99% of the time.

However, that being said, 870 does have wayy more option add on you can play with.

hope that helps

I call MALARKY on your MALARKY call sparky. :bsFlag:

Double Malarky!

Best be bringing gloves...

I'll still choose any pump over any semi for a SHTF situation. That said, I love my 870.
The 870 has so many aftermarket parts it's hard to make up ones mind on how they want to dress theirs. I'm working on one of those top-folding ATI 870 stocks at the moment. Problem with customization is you quickly begin to see your gun budget start to empty out. Then your wife gets all mad that you'll buy your "shiatgun" all kinds of stuff. She wants Tiffany's, I want Tapco. My alarm clock is in my livingroom next to my couch.

Pumps may be more reliable under ideal conditions but add stress and awkward shooting positions into the picture and short stroking a pump becomes a lot more likely than a semi malfunction.

I love my 930 (except the LOP is a wee bit too long). I've found this link and I'm considering doing the same thing. The only downside that I can think of, is the tang safety and pistol grip are not the most ideal combo.
