Iam considering buying a new 12g and like the 887 but cant find any locals with one to get an opinion on it. The 870 has proven itself and 887 is suposed to be a close clone with mods. Is this true? Any other sugestions in a 3.5load would be apreciated as I have not made upmy mind. Thanks guys.

Is this the one with the plastic wrapped barrel?
All black and a fiber optic front sight ?
I have seen one here and BC ( if it is the one you and I are mentioning )
I think it is one uggerly looking shot gun.
Get a 870 express or a 870 Wingmaster and it will last you for a very long time.

I'd also like some feedback on these guns. I am looking at getting another (beater) 12ga because it's a bloody sin to be beating up my nice wingmaster in the swamps all the time hunting ducks. I could go with an express (which is tempting because I could get a short barrel and also use it for a defender) but the overmolded everything proof coating intrigues me. Be nice to have a gun I could take to the swamps and not have to worry about. Some of the new features look nice too, double locking lugs, new slide release. I'm going to go down and handle one tomorrow if I have time.

Anybody? I got a hold of one yesterday, not overly impressed but for the price I guess I shouldn't be. They're not awful, but they sure feel bombproof

Only look like an 870 superficially. The action is completely redesigned for quick and easy maintenance, dissasembly, assembly. However, if it ain't broke, don't fix it! The 870 (both express and wingmaster) are great, reliable shotguns.

The 887 has been designed to compete directly with the Benelli Nova crowd.

the slide release looks like a finger pincher

dont personally like the thought of a plastic coated barrel, i picture moisture getting in there and eating away at the barrel with no way knowing or ability to clean it out

oh yeah its fugly

i'll likely own an 870 someday but can't see one of these ever making its way to my lock up

According to Remington the polymer is bonded to the barrel during manufacturing and moisture won't 'get in'.

they really dropped the ball on the slide release
almost all the other pumps are behind the trigger for a reason with this one you can't even hold it down to pump the mag empty, have to push it and release for each round or get your finger pinched by the fore end

Yeah. If they stay with producing the 887, I see the slide release being moved. It's awful.

I ordered one for my buddy because he is not internet savvy, it came to my place and I checked it out. It's light, good sights, but internally feels flimsy. The transfer bars flop around and it has a weird snap-on bolt cover which seems pointless but it is supposed to keep out debris. My buddy said it shot everything he put through it and recoil wasn't bad for such a light gun-he liked it. it isn't a workhorse. For a casual bird hunter or small game guy who only goes out a couple times a year it is probably ideal. I own a SuperNova and the quality isn't even close. it's 400 bucks worth of shotgun for 400 bucks. It's focus is on moisture protection, ie. casual shooters who don't clean too much or shoot too much, a minimal investment for part-time shooters that shoots 2 3/4", 3", or 3 1/2" shells. If you are in that demographic, then its worth it.

I own A 887 and I'm happy with it, is not the best shotgun ever, but is a problem free gun, no worries about rust or scratch, and for the price you have 2 3/4", 3", or 3 1/2" gun.
So, recomended

Ive had mine for about 3 months now and love it, I’ve put over 300 shells throw it and haven’t had a problem. I don’t mind the slide release at all I like where it is. I would defiantly recommend it.

887 Sucks.

Went out hunting this season, has loaded with slug and shot every other round. I was thinking if I came across a deer I could light it up, or if a bird came along, one stroke and I was good to engage him.

Several times while hunting, I had an issue where two rounds would come out of the mag and into the tray during a pump. Result was the weapon was jammed until one round was pushed back into the tube, or one was dug out of the tray.

Loaned the 887 to a buddy and the same happened to him.

For the price, a new firearm should not have such a problem. Stick with the 870.
