I've had mixed responses on this one. A buddy of mine had his bolt stolen for his mod 7 in .308...and I figgured it as a standard rem short action...but now I've heard differently. Anybody know for sure if a mod 7 will take a standard short action bolt.
Thanks

Bearhunter..thanks much. You figgure a 600 bolt will fit the mod 7 receiver?
That opens up the replacement field a little more for sure...you hate to can a rifle just because you cant replace the bolt...its a pain, but worth the effort..again, thanks..

The 600 and 7 bolts are very similar, except for the bolt handles. I have retrofitted a 7 bolt into a 600 receiver.
There is another option - a 700 bolt - long or short - can be altered to work in a 600 or 7. The bolt handle is removed, the body shortened, threaded for the bolt plug, cut for the cocking camtrack, and the handle re-attached. A CGN from AB has done this, having written a program for a CNC machine to do the job. Boltplug, cocking piece, mainspring and firing pin are all available. Not a job for the fainthearted, but an option.

Model 7 bolt

You can buy a chrome moly bolt from Pacific Tool for the Model 7. I just did and it cost $125.00 USD. The bolt handle is included but not silver soldered and it is not blued. Not available is stainless either. Just another option.

Remington, of course, will not sell you a bolt. A Remington replacement would have to be installed by an authorized service centre.
I had a bad experience with this once. The authorized service centre quoted a price, the job came back with a substantially higher invoice, the bolt body was not new (serialed to another rifle) and NO fitting had been done. I was really embarrassed, my customer having approved the job based on the first, lower, quote.

Outstanding thread

Gents...I am humbled by the flow of good info once again. All Good. I have never lost a bolt..but was confident I could deal with it should it happen,,,,then my side kick had his Mod 7 bolt stolen..well, as you know, and I have come to realize...the 7 is a horse of a different color....I am confident with this info you members have provided that we can come up with a workable solution...thank you very much for your in-put.
