has anyone seen one of these or know anything about them. I saw one at the recent gun show. It interested me, especially the cal, but price was $1000. The seller said they were made from 1935-53. This one looked to be in nice shape. Wonder what sort of accuracy one could expect? pie-plate? Any info will be greatly appreciated.

I had a 81 in 300S, I shot it very little but it shot a lot better than I do. I had one group of 1 1/2" at 100' with peeps.
I still have M-8 in 35, it not quite as accurate, that old 300S surprised me:eek:

$1000. is ridiculous...I just sold the M-81 for $450 which is about top dollar for a minty one.
 
I have two of the Model 81's (one in 300 savage) and four of the model 8's. Homely, kick like the devil, kinda heavy, lots of small parts...but oh what cool guns to look at and shoot.

I agree with Senior- I've never seen a Standard Grade 8 or 81 worth anywhere near $1000. $300-$450 more like it.
 
If its any help my Granddaddy got one in 300sav, It shoots a inch or better at 100 yards with peeps...But he's had this thing since he was 18 that was a loooong time ago! Accuracy might have something to do with the 2 foot thick barrel and 10 pound gun I don't know:p

Easy to keep on target when things get hot, gramps shoots 2 shots that sound like one every time he see's a deer, I mean you only hear one bang for 2 shots and the deer is usually DRT...1000 bucks is outrageous though $400 is as high as I would go as others said.

Just throwin this in there but this site is the only reason I even look at a computer Ya'll Is awesome cats!
 
I want one too. I've a Remingtonn 722 in .300 savage, and a Browning Auto-5. A .300 Savage Model 81 would round out the group nicely. I know P+S Militaria has a couple model 8/81s but not in .300 Savage, I think they have a the .30,.32 and .35 models...
 
The actions of the 8 and 81 were virtually the same (with a few small improvements). I personally like the straight stock and thinner forearm on the Model 8 a lot better. The Model 8 in 35 Remington was the most common model down here. The 8 was never made in 300 Savage, as they introduced this in the "new" Model 81.

I'd appreciate if you fellas would keep me in mind when you see these minty $300-450 8/81's come up for sale - I'll take 'em!

Better yet, I'll take all, and pay very good dollars, for the FN version ;)
