Rem Model 725 in .244 rem.

I have found one of these for a decent price, but the owner doesnt know the twist rate of the barrel and I dont want to make a 4 hour drive to pick it up based on the owners "turns of the cleaning rod" calculation . Does anyone know if these were made in anything other than 1:12 twist rates?

I have heard they made a 1:9 twist in this rifle nearing the end production but i cant confirm it. Is there anyway for a guy to know what the twist of the rifle is by the serial number or something else.

Also on a side note. What size of bullet would the 1:12 twist barrels stabilize.

Some 1-12 barrels work fine with 100-105 gr bullets (particularly RN bullets), some won't. You shouldn't have any issues at all with up to 95 gr bullets for sure. I have also heard that Rem changed the twist for the final 244 marked run, but have never come across one that wasn't a 1-12 twist. - dan

What about the 725 action in general than. I know it is a pretty nice looking action (probably my favorite) but is this action worth spending the money on a rebarrel if it turns out the gun wont stabilize 100+ grain bullets.

For the price I guess it would make a good Varminter. I gotta justify it somehow.......(just got a .243win)

A pretty nice rifle. Kind of a deluxe 722. The 85 grain bullets are excellent in the 6mm anyway and the 12 twist will shoot them very well. You won't be hurt by not being able to use 100 spitzers. Regards, Bill.
