hey guys

would you sell a Tikka t3 lite for a Rem 700 mountain rifle ?

the ascent .270 has fell through, he wants too much bla bla.

I want light.

So a Rem 700 mountain rifle In 308 in the Black spider web stock has popped up. good price too
and says its only 2.8kg with rings........ is the tikka heavier?

Thanks

wL

I just bought one in 7mm 08 and it weighs 6 lbs 5.3oz or 2.871 kg. The .308 will be ever so slightly lighter due to a larger bore.

The Tikka may be slightly lighter. The advantage if the Rem is that the stock is very solid feeling, not like the hollow flimsy injection molded plastic of the Tikka.

The stock in the Remington weighs 34 oz. A swap with a McEdge would loose 12 or 13 oz. Plus an aluminium shroud and some bolt machining you could drop a pound. By then your probably better off to have bought the ascent.

I would because I'm just not a fan of tikkas. My mountain SS in .270 win with Talley light weights and a 3-9x40 leupold vx2 weighs 7lbs2oz all up.

It shoots great and is a joy to carry, I don't think you'd be disappointed

If you're dissatisfied with the T-3, go ahead and swap it off. I like the Remington 700 platform, but if your hopes are merely to save a few ounces, you might be disappointed. The 700 Mountain SS is listed at (2.8 KG) 6.5 pounds, while the T-3 Light comes in half a pound lighter at 6 even. By the time you scope the Remington, add a sling, and put a few rounds in the magazine you're at 8 pounds.

A Weatherby Ultralite in .308 comes in well under 6 pounds, but is likely even more expensive for you than the Kimber, and not everyone is smitten with the Weatherby stock design or the MK-V's multiple locking lugs. The CZ 550 Predator might be worth a look, but it's even heavier than the Remington.

The downside of the Remington 700s is that they generally require a bit of tweaking to achieve their accuracy potential. Chances are that out of the box, the T-3 will outshoot it. The good news is that 700s can usually be found cheaply enough that a few dollars spent on bedding and a Timney won't break the bank. That said I've never seen a 700 that wouldn't hold 1.5 MOA out to 300 with good handloads, although I haven't shot any of the new models. A minute and a half is good accuracy for big game hunting, where field marksmanship tends to be the limiting factor not the rifle's intrinsic accuracy. That said its desirable if the first two rounds out of the barrel hit point of aim. If those first two rounds out of a cold bore don't print together, then IMHO, the rifle needs some work.

My Remington "cobbled together" mountain rifle weighs 5lbs 8oz bare, 5lbs 11.3oz with rings/bases and 6lbs 10oz with the 3-9x40 scope and 3 rounds in the mag. (it is in .308win with a 20" pencil barrel and removable mag. Get the Remington. )

My Tikka T3 SS Syn 338 Federal ( 22")with Talley Rings and a Leupold Vari x 111 2.5 - 8 weights 114 oz so 7.125 lbs
My Rem M7 SS Syn 300 Saum (22") with Talley Rings and a B&L 4200 Elite 3.5-10 weights 132 oz so 8.250 lbs
My Rem M600 Custom SS Mountain Rifle in 284 Win (22") with Talley Rings and a Leupold VX 3 3.5 -10 BC weights in at 103 oz so 6.43 lbs

The factory Rem M7 is HEAVY but with a change to a Wildcat stock it will be about 7.5 lbs - the Rem M7 SYN stock is a Heavy POS ! lol RJ

Thanks for these replies. helping out a lot.

So as you guys can tell, Im officially stuck LOL

I will buy the Remington if I can sell the T3 soon enough , before the Rem sells....

big picture will be the 2.5g for the Kimber, but if money gets in the way of that, and 1 or 2 of my rifles sell, I could end up with a T3 Left Hand (308).

I have always been a Fan of the Rems

a Friend had a 7mm-08, he claimed to be a Mountain rifle from Remington, it I think had open sights aswell, a rubbery grip feel to the black stock and to be honest felt a little heavier than it should of. but it might be a similar model or something?

thanks, will see what pans out of here

WL; I would opt for the 700 Mountain platform. While the T3 rifles tend to be slightly more accurate out-of-box, They are certainly nothing special, IMHO.

As Boomer noted, the Remington will invariably deliver great field accuracy with a small amount of "tweaking", and to me at least, just feels so much nicer to carry and use.

I had a 700 Mountain in 7x57, and regret selling it. But, could not justify having it and the 700 Classic in the same chambering.

Regards, Dave.

other than a Macmillan, what other light weight stocks are available for the tikka?

I put a B&C Medalist on my Compact and with Talleys and a VX3 1.75-6 it weighs a hair under 7lbs. The B&C weighs 32oz so not a lightweight but it's a much better stock than the regular T3 lite stock and it balances great now. The McMillans are around 10oz lighter and there are likely a few other brands as well.

Have a look at the B&C's, not sure how light you want to make the rifle.

Have you ever checked on the Rem Custom shop guns? I had a custom shop KS mtn that was a no need to fiddle with gun, right out of the box. The KS mtn rifle is still avail from them, along with whatever other variations they have.
