Looking to get a coyote gun and have come down to these 2. Stevens $319 vs rem $499. Is the price diff. worth it the rem sure handles better. more fit and finish. But for the price difference I can get a decent scope with the stevens for the same price as the remington

I'd go with the sps for sure. Way more flexibility as far as modifications and resale. It has the m700 action which is worth the price of the rifle right there!!!

Do it

Brambles

I like the stainless SPS's, but dont like the BBQ paint-like finish on the matte SPS, seems flaky and poor.

but, the action alone on the m700 is worth the $500 or so, and the stocks on the SPS's arent bad (and come with Limbsaver pads).

pretty much can't go wrong with either! flip a coin

I would would go with the SPS. Like mentioned before the action alone is a great selling point and you can buy so much aftermarket stuff for a Model 700.
I agree with Bartell that the matte finish is lame, I never had mine flake but wondered what Id do if some of it rubbed off.
The Stevens also lack a hinge floor plate so you can never upgrade to a clip.
The upside to the Stevens is that they are cheap and decent shooters

Cheers

I just bought a stevens 243 and although I still have to shoot it (this week-end) i'd say I am surprised at the gun for the price.

I think you'd better put more money on the scope than the gun if it shoots, and you won't caret too much about bumping the stock.

Just an opinion, but for a 319$ that shoots under an inch stock, you can hardky go wrong...

Fit and finish on the Stevens is higher then the Rem SPS. Savage put their high end Classic gloss blue action in the least expensive rifle on the market. Both have stupid triggers and I hear that the SPS cannot be lighten as much as the past 700's. The Trigger on the Stevens can be crisp but will never be considered light. They can be changed easily though.

The stocks are about the same on both with the better recoil pad going to the Rem. In a light kicker, a wash.

Both can shoot well but I have had so much success with the Stevens/Savage actions and rifles that is what I would recommend. Bed the action and free float that barrel (applies to either rifle).

Savage actions now have as much aftermarket stuff as the Rem. The actions are better manf and finished. The actions are modular allowing a variety of swapping to occur. The Savage/Stevens action are actually more flexible to changes then the Rem.

If I was looking for a "ready to go" econo rifle I'd grab a Steven's 200. I gotta admit that the Rem SPS's are tempting, too. Especially if one was looking for an action for a starting point for a rebarrel project... ;)

mine

i love my SPS DM, the Matte finish has given me no problems. i might go to a Stevens for a varmint gun, as it wouldnt be a gun that gets used much as compared to my other ones.

I have heard great things about both, just went with the model 700 for the action

I have to agree with you Jerry, the quality of the Rem's is sketchy and if you get a bad one it will ruin your day.
Savage is more consistent with the quality control on their rifles made in the States.

I've never owned either. With the amount of threads lately on the stevens 200. It seems to be the way to go. Especially for the $$$

Dave.
