I bought two boxes of Remington Thunderbolt the other day for my Papoose (16"bbl) because the American Eagles were misfiring every 10th round (light strikes)
The wierd thing is that the Remingtons went subsonic about every 1/3 of the time. Now I think the advertised vel of 1255 should be well above the sound barrier so I tried them in my friends 22" Win pump and the same thing happened. What the heck is wrong with these shells??
And also why are they so dirty (The cases were covered in soot and the barrels needed cleaning after only like 20rds)???
Dang I'm not impressed especially at 2.80 a box from SIR
Although the Fed AE are terribly inaccurate at least the break the sound barrier with some regularity.
They are pretty accurate though:runaway:

Probably since it's cold. The powder doesn't burn as fast in the cold.
I've chronyed ammo in cold temperatures and it is slower.

But then again, the speed of sound is lower in the cold.

I use that stuff religiously and will honestly say,it is dirty stuff. But it has always been consistent for me and its good quality for what you pay(i get it for 12$ a brick)I find it to be the best "cheap" ammo out there.I've also noticed it is dirtier in the cold. But hey..i love cleaning my guns

My barrel was clean and warm.
They list in the catalog at SIR is 17.99/500 but I just bought 2 boxes to try them out( thank god) and per 50rds its 2.79.
I found it was way more accurate then the Fed AEs and 100% reliable (so far) but wayyyy more expensive. And way dirtier.
Besides the speed of sound at -10 should be below 1067 f/s... well below the advertised 1255 f/s. And why were some going supersonic. I Think the batch I got was junk and I've had a few crap batches of Rem before. I Think I'm gonna stop buying Rem. ammo.

Thunderbolt's

bought a brick of the remington thunderbolt's a few years ago, used about 4 boxes and gave the rest away, there just N.G., i've tried Winchester wildcat's and was getting alot of dude's , and they are not really high velocity , the best results i've had are with Remington " yellowjacket's " 33 grain bullet , 1500 f.p.s. 2 inch drop at 100 yards ,i know you can get CCI stinger's , but i heard guy's saying they had feeding problems with , they shoot at about 1650 f.p.s. good luck Joe

I find Thunderbolts to be a bit dirty as well as inconsistent. I think the temperature coupled with your short barrel and semi-auto action contributed to the lower than advertised velocity.

Point in case: Last winter I did some testing of my own to see the effect of temperature on velocity. I found out that on average, at about -15C I got velocities of around 100-150fps slower than advertised for the high-vel stuff.

Also, my mossberg semi was shooting about 50fps slower than my bolt action savage with the same barrel length. (18.5") due to the action I assume.

So with your 16" semi auto at -10, 1000fps is totally normal IMHO and the inconsistencies agree with what I found with the thunderbolts, shot-to-shot. The only time I bought the Thundercraps at SIR there were 15.99/brick.

I worked in the Port Hope area when Winchester was making ammo in the area, we could buy paint cans, gallon size, for a dollar. Mostly weight rejects, line sweep ups, bad primer fills and staining. That was in the 70/80's. I imagine that in todays business integrity they box and sell them and you just got an exceptionaly bad batch

This might be a little off subject, but isn't it odd the amount of shooters that have duds with promotional ammunition?

Personnaly, for plinking I like Winchester Wildcat and Dynapoint the best.

I've shot many thousands rounds of this stuff (and Federal Lightning, and a few bricks of Thunderbolt also) and I don't remember getting more then 1 dud every few thousands rounds (And in most cases, it would fire the second time around)... which I think it pretty good consedering the price point of this ammo.

For you guys with all the duds, what kind of gun are shooting it from?
;)

I shoot a lot of different kinds of ammo and all I can say is CCI CCI CCI!!!!
American Eagles are inaccurate and misfire.
Thunderbolts are dirty and velocity is wierd.
CCI Velocitors are rockin power and super accurate
Stingers blow a squirrels leg off and never misfire
' Subsonics pack a punch and are really accurate
CB caps rule.
CCI CCI CCI
The BEST

Another vote for CCI, but I do use AE.
They work fine in my old Mossbergs. :)

That Remmy stuff is unbelievably dirty ammo. :(

I'll never, ever use Remington rimfire ammo, even if given to me.
That goes for me too. Their shotgun ammo lately has been really bad too, very dirty.
