I am thinking about building a rifle in 6mm BR chambering from Remington 700 action and 243 barrel. I also pretty much settled for Remington 700 as an action to build a rifle from. Choice of action is because Eliseo doesn't make stocks for other receivers yet. If you know of a better way of building 6BR please let me know. Also please if you know gunsmith on Lower Mainland or Vancouver Island who has reamer and have done re-chambering for 6mm BR. Also, I cannot find the source of REmington 700 short actions, so I guess I will have to buy a perfectly fine 243 rifle and cannibalize parts off of it. What a waste. For a budget build, is there better option?

BAT machine makes a action (borden also) for ellison stocks, get it built in the good old USA and just get it imported here,

do not know why you are unfamiliar with the other options for ellisio stocks ( I just sold a anschutz in an ellisio orange stock so he makes them for rimfire also)

IMO..if you do not already have a barrelled action and you have to go purchase one, I would look in the EE section and try and locate a 6BR that is already put together..always cheaper buying a good use. If you are set on building new there are some excellent actions that built to 700 specs and you can go from there. Buying a new rifle, just for the action isn't cost effective...but that's my opinion..

I think the labour spent on cutting back a factory 243 barrel, re threading it, chambering it... would be better spent on a quality stainless barrel being installed.

X2 on the custom barrell plus the twist rate on the factory barrel is 1 to 9.125 , it wont shoot the heavier bullets. there are a few 1 to 8 twist 6mm barrels in Canada for sale.

If you don't plan on shooting bullets you wouldn't shoot in a factory 243, the cut back re chambered barrel will work. A 9 or 10 twist will handle normal bullets up to 100 grain. Long pointy ones up to 85 grain.

how far do you want to take the performance?

If you want a full meal deal F class or BR type rig, you might be better off just working with a full custom action. A bit more now, a whole lot more potential later.

If you are looking for a donor, I have a rifle that can be of interest. Was a donor too but way too much on my plate right now. Rem 700 243 complete w/ det mag like new.

For the time and investment to do the install, you would be best served with a quality barrel. They don't need to cost the moon but will always give you better performance which is the whole point.

Let me know if I can help with parts and the build.

all boils down to how much you want to spend. If you want a Remington style action, every custom maker out there has one that will fit. If you want to enjoy what makes a 6BR so great, get a custom barrel. Nothing wrong with going Remington and simply adding a barrel, although I would have the trigger adjusted or replaced. I wouldn't waste your time or money re-chmbering a remington factory barrel.

What type of bullet are you thinking using??How many grains?
If you use a 105 gr,I don't think that a plain 243 barrel twist will give you an optimum performance...But that's my opinion!

Elisio stock? Are they available in Canada now??

you can get them imported as long as they are part of a completed firearm, so if you are getting a custom action just order the action in a E'o stock and let your gunsmith in Canada chamber it if you so choose, that loophole will be closed in a year ofr 2 I am sure Jefferson

If you go with a Rem 700 action, you would probably want it trued ($200), new barrel ($500), chambering & finish ($300)...you also need to put a spacer in the magazine to feed properly ($50 if you do it yourself). I built a sporter with that configuration and used an HS stock.

We have Borden Tube Gun actions in stock and are close to getting our first order of Eliseo Tube Gun chassis. There are at least two very competent gunsmiths in your province.
