Rem870 Super Mag receivers?

Hi all,

I got this Remington 870 Sportsman field shotgun with a 26 inch barrel. On the side it saids it's chambered for 2 3/4 and 3". It also saids: " 3 1/2 only with Super Mag Receivers", what exactly does that mean and how do I know if I got "Supermag Receiver"?

Sounds like someone replaced the barrel with one off an Super Mag.

All the 870 barrels are interchangeable. Shell length is determined by the shortest factor, if the receiver will only handle 3 in, that is what you got.
 
Remington Super mag---------these receivers, clearly stamped, mean you can load 3-1/2" shells. If it does not say Super mag then you cannot load 3-1/2". The barrel will shoot 3-1/2" as long as you have a Supermag receiver. Otherwise 2-3/4" or 3" only.
 
Off the top of my head I cannot remember the 870 Sportsman field shotgun being made in 3 1/2. Barrel was changed as the boys say would be my guess also.
I know the last two new barrels I ordered from rem came in including 3 1/2" and these were blue wingmaster barrels
When I asked they indicated it reduces inventory to keep one 2 3/4" - 3 1/2" for all applications

Actually, all new production 12ga. 870 shotguns come with the vent-rib barrels chambered and marked as such. The slug/turkey barrels on the other hand are chambered for either 3" or 3.5" depending on application. As 3macs1 noted, inventory is one reason and I suspect another reason has to do with possible lawsuits that could result if a guy placed a new 3" barrel on a Super Magnum receiver, loaded it with a 3.5" shell and possibly have the barrel blow causing serious injury or death. With all 870 barrels (except for the Special Field) being interchangeable it really isn't all that hard to imagine happening...and I've actually bought a used Express Super Mags that had the older 3" chambered barrels on them...that being said anyone buying a used Super Mag shouldn't assume it is the way it left the factory and should always confirm chamber specs on the barrel before shooting it!

BTW...The Super Mag receiver has a lengthened ejection port and what appears to be a 2 piece bolt when viewed.
