Damn... I remember a few years back there was a K-31 at Canadian tire for $300. Most retailers had them for around $350.
And now they're going for double that and even more... barely 4 years later. I really should have got one back then.

On the other hand SKSs and Mausers haven't really increased much.

Yeah I was planning on getting one about 4 years ago but I ended up getting a CZ 858 instead and kind of forgot about the K31. Knowing what I know now I would've bit the bullet and got both.

Haha I should have got 3 or 5 of them... that would be some serious return on investment right now.
But it's alright, I got a perfect bore, and nice all round M38 Mauser for $425 about a year ago. They're about $75 - $100 now.

They come up on EE all the time.

I consider them the best d@m Milsurp on the market.

Quality and accuracy all the way.

Some may argue, but I'm sold.

Bought a very nice K31 for $295 a few years ago and a VZ24 for $399, both from Trade Ex. Very happy with both, great rifles.

K31 is awesome and I'd love to own one with a sea container of GP11.

However, with the cost of them now and the ammo to run em, I'll stick to a quality .308 bolt action.

When the Zombies come over the hill i MIGHT find .308 lying on the ground, but I sure as hell ain't gonna find GP11 lying there. So .... practical it is.

Ha I remember seeing joe salter selling a ton of these years ago, it's where I had scored mine for 250$ in excellent shape. :( too bad I traded it years ago as well.

M38 Mausers still sell in the 425$ range.

I bought my Swiss collection when the rifles were 300$ a piece (a couple I actually paid 600$ and got a rifle and crate of ammo). The only Swiss rifle in my collection which cost more was my 1889, which is also in VG+-EXC condition for the princely sum of 450$. These were all bought within the last 4 years.

Ammo wasn't too bad a buy either, bought 7 crates when the price was .63 cents a round, that was this past Christmas time. The lesson is to buy when the prices are good. Many things in my collection haven't gained in price at all, others have shot up significantly. Just luck of the draw.

I miss being able to buy chinese SKSs for 169.99. They are like 500 dollars down here. There's one for sale locally right now in poor shape for $350. Granted I could buy a WASR AK47 for $499 last year.

The way you worded it sounded like the M38 Mauser was only worth 75-100$ not had gone up 75-100$ which is likely what is causing confusion.

K31s didn't shoot up slowly over 4 years they shot up recently, like within the last year (for example my friend bought one at 450$ 8 months ago, they now sell at 700$+). I can name a few others which have shot up in price quickly for no real good reason. M1 Garands, and M39s. Both shot up in price over a very short period of time for pretty much no reason other than all of a sudden demand appeared. In the case of the M39s the quantity in country actually increased quite a fair bit, yet the price over doubled (until the price shot up into the range it is at now, they were 350-500$ rifles for the longest time and the quantity hadn't really increased since the 90s).

It seems to be a hype train rather than anything. Don't get me wrong I love my K31, but I can tell you my G1889, G96/11, G11, and K11 haven't shot up into the same price range even though they are less common than a K31 (production numbers for all those rifles being in around the 200,000 or less area, well the K31 was in the 550,000 area). Much like the M1 Garands I expect them to cool off a little after a bit (even the worst Garands were selling for 1500+$ for a while, now they have become more reasonable and you can find some in the 1200$ range).

Actual rare or more obscure firearms tend not to fluxuate in price just because there is less demand for them from people who aren't collectors (most people aren't collectors at the end of the day, most just want some milsurps and to satisfy themselves with a little bit of knowledge, nothing wrong with that, but there is a distinct difference between collectors and them). Its odd to think of it that way, but that is the way things are.

I'm content waiting for the fad to die off a little, or maybe a new batch imported before I jump in the pool. They're gorgeous looking rifles but I'd rather spend the money on something substantially rarer.

Remember when good Lee Enfields were $100? I've had better returns on firearms than any financial investment I've ever made.
