Well I got another buck on Remembrance Day this year. Not as big as some years but bigger than others. I slept in and decided to go to the post office to make a money order for some bullets I ordered in 41 Long Colt. I had been hunting long and hard all week and was starting to get worn down as all I had seen was 10 does with no doe tag (my son has one but has been too busy with college and work). I arrived at my spot at 10:55 as planned and gave my respects at 11:00 as planned. When I started to cool down I needed to remove my clothes from my seat bucket which made a noise when I removed the lid so I gave a call at around 11:45. I could hear a deer working scrapes and rubs in the distance grunting and digging. I was in some really thick bush but he finally came close enough that I could get a shot off as he was trotting 50 yards parallel to me. The deer flinched good and started to come right towards me. At 5 yards it was heading slightly away from me and I got another shot off which connected again. The deer changed direction and was heading towards me and got within 5 feet of me the other side of some trees. It then went about 5 yards passed me and collapsed. It didn’t scare the crap outta me until a couple a minutes later when I started to think about the rut crazed buck. Both shots were good kill shots and it was obviously a testosterone based charge. Before I tagged the deer (to make sure he was down for the count as he was not breathing) I went back to both spots and they were good blood in the snow at both places (we had about an inch of snow outside of Rosseau overnight that was melting). In fact when I cleaned him I could see both shots were good double lung hits and I am sure the first shot would have finished him. This was the first year using my own handloads for the 30-06 and I did not recover either bullet as they both passed through. This spot is very good I could get a deer here every year. When I checked things out within 50 yards I found 5 scrapes and 3 rubs. Every year this spot is like this and this was not the big boy of the area even though he was 206 pounds and had 7 points.
