Hey all you shot gunners,

I was talking with a guy the other day and I mentioned I wanted top pick up an 870 for water fowling. I told him you can get a
brand new 870 express for around $400 bucks.

He says to me "yeah but they're full of plastic parts". I asked him if it was just some external parts and he said "no some internal parts are platic too"

I was surprised by that and wanted to ask the know it alls... oops I mean experts on CGN. :p

So what's the deal with the 870 express anyway? Which parts are platic and of most concern?

Is it worth picking up one of these? or should I be looking for an older wing master and forget owning a new shotgun for under $500.

Let me know what you think guys,

Thanks

Roscoe

The trigger housing is plastic, so is the safety, the trigger and the synthetic stock.

No big deal, I just find that the trigger kinda flexy.

No worries about the plastic parts, they're quite tough. I've never heard of the trigger itself being plastic?Definately a metal trigger on my express.

Well I must of had a brain fart, always seemed plasticy but I just looked and it is metal. I must of been thinking of the 10/22 then.

Does the el-cheapo finish bother you guys at all?

What I am really wondering I think is about overall buys statisfaction.

I am a bit of a sucker for the traditional wood and steel guns so I am concerned that after a season I will be kicking myself.

The finish isn't bad, just not polished. If you don't like it you can always have it refinished or do it yourself. It almost looks like paint but it isn't, I don't mind it though.

Get the wooden 870 express, it is steel and why would you kick yourself the gun is a good bang for the buck.

The cheap Express finish can be a bit of a problem if you hunt over sal####er. I used an 870 express for three years hunting on the ocean and I found that the barrel and receiver were prone to surface rust. Not a big deal, but you have to clean and oil the metal after every hunt to prevent it from rusting.
I bought a Benelli Supernova this year and I found the finish to be much better. I have hunted several days in a row without cleaning and have not had any problems with rust, even after letting the gun sit for 2 weeks before cleaning.

Thanks for all the advice. I probably will pick one up since the price is right. That being said, if I come across an older (metal) 870 that is in good shape for less money, I am likely to snap it up.

The worst case scenario is that I will need to buy an other gun to replace it in a few years.

Don't we all need an excuse to buy new toys?

I love mine. I think about it as, I have a fun bush gun with a somewhat short bbl (18"), and if I want I can get a longer bbl for ducks. It looks partially tacticool with just the matte finish.:)
