Well I have just inherited a Remington 11-48 semi auto in EXCELLENT condition. My brother had this shotgun in his gun vault for get this..almost 35 years. He's never used it since then. So when I was hunting this year (not with him) and all the deer were "on the run" I thought of getting something in semi auto, either a center fire or shotgun. When I spoke to him sometime ago he reminded me of the Rem that he had. He said , take it if you want it. So at this price of $0.00 I'm thinking of using it next year for deer. Now I understand this is an older semi auto, recoil operated not gas. So I have heard it gives a good kick and even more so with slugs. It has a modified cylinder, bead front sight. I've just taken it apart and it looks very clean. So what do you think? Is it a good candidate? Should I add a rear sight? Any comments and/or suggestions would be appreciated.

They were decent guns but don't tend to take heavy loads well. Assuming you won't be shooting a lot through it I'd assume a good rifled slug like a Breneke should perform reasonably well. I wouldn't alter it in any way if it's as good as you say as you'll destroy any collector value. Don't hurt it either as parts are near impossible to find....

I had one for years, and by coincidence, it too, was modified. In those years I tended to keep a gun I had, good or bad, and this one was not of the good variety.
I shot more shells to get less birds with that gun than any other I ever had. Mine handled heavy loads, OK, and the action worked, except if it got dirt in the action it wouldn't load the next shell.
Don't like to rain on you're picnic, maybe you and it will get along good. I considered it the first poorer quality gun that Remington made.

Edited to say I had a Poly-choke put on it, but that didn't improve anything.

The long recoil action of the 11-48 will cause some poor performance from slugs. The barrel just moves too much and consistency will be hard to obtain. My experience from a long recoil Browning auto 5 backs this theory up.

Can anyone suggest where I can get a plug for this gun? If one is not available specifically for this model is there a substitute? Can I make one that would fit? Any suggestions?

Thanks

Universal fit plugs are available. Just cut to length. Most of them came with plugs so check and make sure it doesn't already have one. If you can't find one pm me I have an original wood one.
